Whilst I've dipped in and out of dressage, I am realising more and more I am a novice in this field. I've always ridden other peoples well schooled horses at prelim and novice level.

BUT I now have a beautiful baby (4 yrs old) and I'm starting from the bottom (intro) working up.

I did the first intro on Sunday and we came third. But I really would like to swat up on what the judges mark on etc etc

So what I'm asking for is websites, books ( Dressage for Dummies?? :D ) or DVD's which would be good for starters.

Thanks!!!!!!!!

The Successful Dressage Competitor by Debby Lush List 1 Dressage Judge and Trainer and Competitor. She is classically trained and is a TTT trainer. Explains all the movements and looks into what the Judges comments mean. She also has another book -The building blocks of Training. I have lessons with her and really rate her as we have progressed really well in a few months after a period where my horse and I were just knocking heads and I hated school work which I used to love.

Would also get a BD rule book as it explains what is expected of the movements and the Scales of Training.

I've also got a DVD Through the Judges Eyes with Stephen Clarke but it starts at Novice / Elementary.

The single most useful thing I did to learn about what judges want was to go and write for one. It's not intimidating at all - they're really friendly and you get brownie points with your local show centre. Ask to write for whatever level you ride at (although I got to write for PSG to music once which was a nice treat as I ride at prelim - novice on a good day). The judge gave me loads of good tips and I got to see exactly what was good and bad about the other competitors from her point of view. Also if you are really lucky they will give you a free lunch.

Just call you local show centre and ask if there are any chances to write coming up.
