Hi I am potentially looking for a dressage saddle for me (5ft.4") and my 18hh Irish draught, big withers, broad - not heavy. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? TIA
Is the equipe jumping from the same horse? If so an equipe emporium dressage may fit well and are lovely, on a lower budget an ideal Jessica or Suzanna would likely be a good option for the shape you describe or an Albion (slk / ultima/ platinum)
Did it fit previously? Horses shouldn't shrink behind the shoulder or anywhere on there back, they should go up in saddle width as they get older and develop top line, I would make sure the saddle has not caused muscle loss by initially being too tight and has now caused the horse to become narrower.
The biggest piece of advice I'd say to you in your situation is don't be talked into a larger saddle because the horse needs it - ie seat size. Have the seat size YOU need otherwise you'll swim which may even affect her. Look up saddles for wider horses, several specialist brands, I fit for one. And for properly wide backed horses, with well sprung ribcages, the rails on continental saddles such as Equipe are seldom flat or wide enough. I went out to someone last year who had an XXW Equipe which her Connie went well in under a gel pad, but it went even better in a saddle designed for XXW with a wider head, wider and flatter rails and a flatter tree, and that was straight out of the van with no gel pad. You don't know until you've tried a specialist wide saddle how much better many horses of this shape will go in one.
