Can anyone point me in the right direction of where to start looking before I get the saddle fitter to fetch me some to try? I have ridden on and off in a bates caprilli for the past couple of months on autumn but it really is too banana shaped on the panels and in all honesty will never fit her that well (the rear panels are close to hovering above her table top back!) so Ive made the decision to sell it and see what the saddler can do to help us - would be nice just to have a few ideas of what might suit first.

Thanks! :)

Sorry I can't help - I have just spent a small fortune on a Schleese made to fit both me and him because my horse was so difficult to fit.

I've got one with a flat back. We have an Albion Platinum Ultima, it fits her beautifully.

Snap - I have a flat backed Connie x ISH and he has this saddle which fits perfectly. Although my horse has a wide fitting, I got the narrow seat so it fits me as well without making me feel like I am riding a barrel. I had a saddle on loan while I was waiting for it and it felt like it rolled, but I feel very secure in my Albion. :p:)

Maybe a few ideas there as they talk about the different type of shape each saddle suits :).

Can't help with specific recommendations I'm afraid as mine is a very straight forward fit. Do you have a jump saddle in a different make to your current dressage? as if so it might be worth trying dressage saddles from the same brand as your jump saddle :).

Black Country or Ideal would both be able to make saddles to suit as they both do open headed trees to suit a flatter back. Also Barnsby would be worth a look. I really like the Theoden.

Thanks folks a few to think about.

My jump saddle I use is a Bates Momentum so same manufacturer but very different shaped panels (momentum ones are flat and align with her back perfectly)

Hmmm....I really like the look of the ideal roella if that suits flatter backed horses well (and being narrow in the waist would suit me too - the bates dressage felt really far to wide in the seat to be comfortable!)

snap again! I don't have an Albion Platinum Ultima but tried one on my quite long and flat backed hanoverian mare and it fitted her like a dream! My other option was an Ideal Susannah, which has a very similar fit, but is cheaper hence I have one of those on order.

They do some beautiful dressage saddles for flat backed horses and ponies. They came out to me, gave me a great amount to try and they als stayed in place beautifully and believe me my welsh cob is very difficult to fit!! Nice and soft and comfy. Love them. :)

Black country freedom tree for flat backed horses :-)

The Freedom tree is very useful but is not suitable for all flat backed horses, or even for very wide horses. I have seen one fitted to an XW New Forest and it was totally unsuitable, the pony needed a much neater tree with a narrower head, the Freedom tree is actually a hoop tree for very wide mutton withered horses.

And obviously check out the reputation online of anything (fitters or brand) you are recommended :)
