help! PLEASE! i am currently looking and to be honest i dont know what i am looking for... i know i need something that is brown 17.5 inches and a med fit but there seem to be so many different styles and cuts.
I might try saddlesdirect and pick a couple out to see what works best for him and me. i do like the look of the albions

I am just about to put a dressages saddle on ebay, its not quite an albion but maybe worth a look. If you were to stumble across a seller called speno69_123 it might be me!!!

I have an Albion and it was the best compromise for me and Gov. He's a 16.3hh Warmblood who takes MW and i'm 5ft4 and need a 17inch saddle. Most of the ones I tried were far too long in the leg for me.

Kieffers are ajustable so a good choice if he's going to gain muscle during your dressage campaign, they're also a little longer in the flap which might suit you but I found the seat a little hard and the twist a bit wide as I recall.

Best is to, as you said, try a few. You'll have your own preference on knee roll/block size etc.

if you can, i'd get a saddler out and try lots, even if it costs you £50, it's got to be worth it, better than making a mistake. that way at least you'll know what you do and don't like. there are huge differences in the feel of saddles that superficially look similar, i've found.
fwiw i went through this the other day and one stood out as perfect, felt as if it had been made for my shape and position, and for the horse, none of the others felt anything like as good. it was an Ideal Susannah, fwiw.

I got an Ideal Jessica from an HHO member and I love it. It's also 17.5 medium fit. It's the second one i've had as I find them extremely comfortable and it fits Boo very well. But like Kerilli said, I'd get a saddle fitter out, I had mine checked for fit and I guess I was lucky not to have anything done to it.
