I am in a real quandary about purchasing a new dressage saddle for my ID x Tb mare. It would be great to get some advice about the best ones. She has high withers but big shoulders as well. The air flocked saddles seem to be getting a bad press.

I brought a kentaur dressage saddle and im really impressed with it. My horse has big shoulders as well and it's cut back so ideal for a horse with a high wither. It has huge knee blocks and really keeps you in a good position.

My experience with a cair saddle is, they are amazing but I.struggled to get someone who could actually fit it. Ended up having bates out on Monday to do it

I have found traditional fitters want to take the cair out and replace with flocking. They've not done the training and the fitting of a cair saddle is very different

Thanks for the feedback. The kentaur saddle sounds interesting i will look onto that. Thanks for the info on the cair saddles as well. My daughter has a bates and she loves it. I am just a little dubious when i start to do some research on the web. A good saddle is a big investment and every week i seem increase my budget!!

I like Albion's beautiful saddles easy to fit , have adjustable heads which makes them flexible once you have made the investment they are comfortable and always sell well I you need to change
But I have just bought a Fairfax very comfortable and the cheapest one is very good value at £1800 the horse just loves it he's got a high wither .
Ideal make several very good value dressage saddles I always liked the Jessica's so they are worth a look.

Even with that shape description there are so many possibilities, do you have a trusted saddle fitter you can get out? What suits someone else's horse or bum may not work for you, plus in many cases the skills of the fitter have a massive impact on how well a given saddle can work.

Thanks for all the information. I am struggling to find a good fitter who has a lot of saddles to try that i completely trust. Up until now i have always ridden in gp saddles. I was hoping to get some ideas of saddles so that i could find local stockiest. It always seems a bit of a minefield. With lots of different opinions as to what is a good saddle fit. Anyone now any good saddlers in the north Yorkshire region?

Saddle fitting is an art and we all work to slightly different paradigms. I hope you find someone. Of course there are "non-tack shop" brands that have their own fitters, with slightly alternative saddle designs of course, so you could research those (thoroughly, not just the posts that are thrilled with their new saddle, but also avoiding those where customers are having problems further down the line) and see if there is a good local fitter. Often depends on budget, and of course the fitters usually will have one brand for you to try. Not always a bad thing, but you will want to have confidence that their product offer will work fo ryour horse, otherwise it's a lot of call outs! Air filled saddles come in two "flavours", Cair in Wintecs and Bates which has a very variable reputation, and Flair in Wows and some other "tack shop" brands. Not all horses get on with both, or either, and some riders find it deadens their feel or gives them extra bounce.
