Hi all,

I've not competed for a few years due to too many knee ops, but I can now trot for about 5 mins rising so am hoping at some point to be able to do a few dressage tests, with the goal of doing BD quest at some point in the future. Due to said ops am now much chubbier than I was, I have a lovely very dark green hacking jacket with a discreet pink check that I plan to wear to start rather than splashing out on a new show jacket immediately.

I always used to wear a white stock with show jacket, and a tie with tweed, but now there appear to be a million and one different show shirts out there, so kind folks what is now currently normal to go with a tweed jacket? Shirt and tie still? What are all these shirts with white collars about, are they for SJ?

Many thanks 🙂

My understanding is that with tweed it's a coloured stock and stock shirt for dressage and the tie and tweed is for showing? Possibly this is because of my eventing background so others might disagree.

However for UA shows I wear one of the shirts with the white collars and no tie or stock. I think they look smart enough and it's less faff. Mostly though I go for a shirt that's stretchy and breathable and doesn't need ironing! So much easier and more comfortable.

You don’t have to wear a jacket for BD now, have a look at the changes in the rule book. A waistcoat and any colour (but only one colour) breeches are ok until you get higher up. There doesn’t seem much change as lots of people seem to like their ‘bling’ l’ve been out in dark breeches - was the only one though 😂

You are right, there are so many variations now!! First and foremost I would always go with what I feel comfortable in. I hated wearing a jacket, I just felt restricted. It was great when the no jacket rule came in!! Whatever you decide on I hope you have lots of fun and please report back!

Just to add to the mix you don't have to wear show gear for quest either.... more relaxed allowing for team colours etc if in a team or you don't have show kit, think the only thing you can't wear is a hoodie!

I wear a shirt and tie for dressage, in fact I wear my old M&S school shirt which considering I'm 41 is excellent value for money!

I’m a similar age… my school shirts were past it… however the white shirt I used to use for waitressing in at 18 is not!

I used to do this but it was an absolute game changer when I swapped to a shirt that was a stretchy technical fabric that didn't need ironing.
