If you are in working canter and the sheet says:
KXM change the rein
X simple change through trot

Do you:
a) come back to trot a couple of strides before X, trot over X and pick up canter a couple of strides after X?
b) Trot at X and pick up canter asap afterwards?
c) Trot just before X and pick up canter on X? or;
d) something else entirely (please elaborate!)

No time for a lesson before event on Sat as out on site all week and could not ride last week as too sore! So Thankyou!

I thought you did canter, walk a couple of strides over X, canter

But hey, what do I know

But it says through trot?! So do I trot, walk over X, trot again then canter? That is a hell of a lot to fit in, I can see saturday being exciting! On the plus side the canter across the diagonal is never the most balanced so at least we won't have to do much of it!!

Ohhh if it says through trot then no walking to be shown whatsoever. Canter, trot a couple of strides (no more than 3 if I remember rightly) over x and pick up canter again

Someone is going to say I am wrong tho LMAO!

No its a simple change through trot. I think you trot on X for a couple of strides 2/3 then strike off into canter. If you trot on X you are showing discipline in the transition.

PMSL - it is a good job I asked! I think I am well out of my depth at Novice - at least the SJing is getting better!

Ok, so for Saturday: 1. Get back on horse.
2. Learn simple changes over X correctly.
3. See if we can give and retake reins in canter without leaving arena (not holding out much hope!)
4. Repeat in a mantra-like fashion 'do not fall on head XC'

Not much to learn then....

It's Novice 120 (BE).

Ok, thanks LEC - so if I trot on X then pick up left canter asap afterwards I will be fine?! Thank god I have spent all summer riding endless repetitions of PN110, we are quite good at trotting on X now!

Monmouth - nice choice of words

I am aiming NOT to be the entertainment this weekend!! Just a nice completion with a clear XC and no more than 16 faults SJ would be fine.

No worries! It's a bloody good job it's not canter-walk-canter, we'd have no chance! We deffo can't do canter to walk, and walk to canter is more like walk-launch-canter....

I would always make sure that if I was doing say.. three strides of trot, the second stride is dead on X.

I think they want to see the trot strides through X rather than the transition to trot at X

As people have said, 3 strides is best, but make sure they are CLEAR strides..

Good luck

I agree with mat_b, you want three strides of trot, with the middle stride going over X. Same as with your give and re-take the reins, eg. if it says do it over X then you want to "give" for one stride, "hold it" for one stride which should be the stride that goes over X, then "re-take" over one stride.
Although I'll be damned if I can manage either of those so accurately!

Thanks guys! Shaab I shall remember that - my best hope is to pick up canter again asap before he gets too flat and on the forehand.

Thanks Matb and Silmarillion, ok so trot one stride before X, trot on X, trot one stride after X then canter. Apparently according to the horse, doing this to pick up left canter lead is fine, but for right canter lead it is VERY exciting and necessitates leaping in the air and hollowing. Interesting!

I love the accuracy descriptions, but I think we will struggle to do more than trot in the general vicinity of X for somewhere between 2 and 5 strides, then pick up canter again with or without airs above the ground. I have decided if I look like I am doing lots, I may get marks for effort...

A simple change is done through walk - does the test sheet say simple change or change of leg through trot (Its highly unlikely to say both!) If its simple change, then before x walk, walk over x nad then pick up canter on the other leg. If its a change of leg through trot, come down to trot before x, trot over x and then pick up canter on the other leg!

It says exactly what I wrote in the original post - simple change through trot. So it does say both, presumably because it is a BE and not a BD test.
