Hi,
I'm currently looking at potential stallions for my Don Primero mare (Don Primero out of a Trakehner mare by Roland) and am interested in any suggestions any of you might have?
My main criteria/ wishlist (I know you cant have everything but if you don't ask you don't get!):
* The mare is graded SHB(GB) so if the stallion is approved with them that would be a bonus
* Ideally 16h+ (mare is a fine 15.2h)
* Not overly fine as don't need to refine the mare
* Dressage lines
* Ideally a good performance record or offspring with a good performance record
* Calm temperament - my mare has a lovely nature but can be a little fiery (not nasty!) so a calming influence would be ideal!

Any suggestions guys? Thanks in advance :)

Millenium....he is a bigger more old fashioned sort but at 20+ he still has the moves and is breathtaking to watch in action as he just loves persforming. He only started stud work on retiring from a successful ridden career where I believe he was short listed for the Olympics at one point but since then, with his eldest only being 3 I believe, he has risen in the futurity rankings to be one of the most consistently scoring stallions, with nearly all being 1st premium or above. He himself is a darling and from experience with him, great favours can be earned if you offer him a bananna! He stands at Hobgoblins Stud.

showmaker is stunning good mover temp ect.. i had the honour of working with him for a wiel so 100 % sure hes laid back. stands 17hh so may be to big??stiring clear of the don primaro line you also have rhondeo or walentino both have faif bone but showmaker has alot more bone without being clumbersum. good luck xx

OK I'll list a few, but it really depends on what your budget is and whether you're talking uk based stallions or abroad!!

If abroad I love Swarovski, I saw him as a 3 year old and was blown away by him, (and I don't like sandro hit horses as a rule!!) but his dam line is Don Gregory, so probably a bit close for your mare. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pJ5s4Pw7Fw

Otherwise I'm really taken with quaterback, I've seen several of his foals that demonstrate exceptional talent, I believe his offspring have done very well in the show and sales abroad, here is Quaterback: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPa7cTjlvA8
and some of his offspring:

and this one is out of a Donnerhall line mare: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHXGMPPEQ0E

I would advise againt the jazz or flemmingh lines if your mare is fiesty.

UK based stallions I like:

Wolkenderry

I love this stallion but again at 16.3 maybe a bit tall?

Lantanzer, again a big lad though at 16.3

For smaller stallions:

Faberge stands at 16hh I believe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GIH7d6oNgI

Fontainbleu (16.1) stock seem to do generally well in the futurity gradings http://www.brownscombestud.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2&Itemid=3

And for something a little different!!! http://www.stallionsonline.co.uk/stallion_28148.html

A few suggestions....
Firstly my own(!) ticks a few of your boxes
Adonnis - 16.3hh by Gribaldi out of a Mondriaan mare (Mondriaan, by Balzflug, competed to PSG and has offspring competing at GP)
He is only young (2005) but his competition record so far: Adonnis qualified for Petplan finals last year, and qualified for summer regionals at Prelim and Novice this year.
He has a lovely calm temperament (stabled next door to mares at home, and never makes a fuss!) and has proven very trainable to date

I would also suggest going along to the BBSH stallion parade at Hartpury and the Stallion Showcase GB at Addington to get a good look at a lot of stallions in one hit!

Faberge stands at 16hh I believe
I'm fairly sure that this Faberge is a gelding! The recently deceased Faberge 50 was a stallion though, so that could be who you have in mind.

It's really hard to do a good job of recommending stallions without photos of the mare plus a real critical look at her: what are her weakest points conformationally, what are you hoping to improve/produce etc?

Ah yes that would be the one, I knew there was a smaller dressage stallion with that name and googled it, I didn't realise he had passed away bless him, thanks for that.

My thoughts would be wolkenderry (already mentioned), my mare in foal to him and he is stunning.

Also Garuda K, standing at the woodcroft stud

Also like Showmaker (again already mentioned but he is big)

I have a stunning 3yr old (well 3 in May) gelding by Johnson (Jazz x Flemmingh) that i bred from my dressage mare. He is a super mover and has excellent conformation and an amazing laid back temprement and attitude.

It really depends how much you want to spend though and whether you want to use a foreign stallion or not. Would be much easier if you had some photos of your mare?

Need a pic of the mare really but start with:

What are her best/worst qualities and what you want to improve/retain either conformationally, movement, trainability.

I think there might be some confusion over my post (!) - as above my 3yr old is gelded and the stallion in the video is Johnson (Jazz x Flemmingh).

Hi, We have a lovely young stallion , Franklyn Sugar, by the world champion Furst Heinrich and out of a St. pr mare by Acord. He is graded with the BWBS. He is British bred and qualified first time out for all the young drsg horse championships he as also awarded first premium BEF Futurity and highest placed dressage score at qualifier.
He will be at Hartpury stallion parade on the 29th Jan and the stallion showcase at Addington on the 6th Feb, come and say hello.
he has a facebook page (website coming soon)
Ruth

I can recommend 'Don Laurie II' (Don Schufro x Lauries Crusador XX x Anka = dam Weltmeyer). He has and gives the most fantastic of characters.

Ooh Colour Fan I don't think I've seen this chap before - thanks for posting.
Have you used him? Do you know what his fertility / quality of semen is like?
Might be a possible contender for my Florestan mare at some point (if I don't have to sell)
:D

OP: I also like the young Wolkenderry as several have mentioned. His owner pops up in here sometimes.

Or how about Relevant? Olympic Dressage Stallion. He's now in the UK at Constancia Stud. Heard good things about his temperament & that of his babies.

Exciting times tho - keep us posted with your selection :)

thank you ever so much to everyone who has replied and ever so sorry for the delay in reposting I've been having a few computer difficulties! I'm currently trying to work out how to post photos - its been a while since i've posted pics on the forum so I'll look it up now and hopefully get a couple of schanti posted!

OK, from the pics if she were mine I would be looking for a stallion to put more suspension into the trot and a more uphill way of going. What are the walk and canter like?
She's got a good shoulder and reach in the front leg so aim to keep that. Wouldn't want her to be an awful lot longer in the back so avoid anything long-backed. may be angle of pic but looks like a tendency towards a sickle hock so avoid anything with that.
Nice head-neck connection. Quite refined but not overly light of bone so wouldn't look for a light boned stallion but equally would avoid anything heavy - for me personally anyway as I prefer them more refined.
Maybe improve the neck-shoulder connection - ridden pic looks nice but then stood up could be stronger so may just be angle on the in-hand pic.

I bred my 7/8 TB to the KWPN stallion Mooiman and have got two very smart foals. My mare's paces are correct but trot definitely needed suspension and she needed more engine and a better neck which I got. She made it to PSG/Inter I competitively but the lack of suspension bit me in the butt for the piaffe & passage. Not going to have this problem with the kids :D
Moo has a lovely calm temperament and my two are both easy to handle and train. he's 16.2hh so not over-large for a maiden mare the height of yours. Would certainly avoid anything over 16.2hh for her as she is on the lighter side. He's international big tour now. I know of a couple of his older kids doing well over here. Mercian Titanisch that did the BD convention this year is one of his and should be coming out GP this year.

Mare - she's 10 months preggers, not just fat :D

:D

I used him in 2008 and got a gorgeous colt that is still with me.
The semen was of very very good quality. The mare was 'ripe' for saturday evening insemination so I went to pickup the semen myself (no saturday delivery and madame surprised us!); she was inseminated on the saturday late evening but hadn't ovulated; whole of sunday still no ovulation; early monday morning scan ovulation just off, so she was inseminated with the 2nd tube of semen collected on saturday morning (48 hr old) .... and it took!! Vet said that semen was of outstanding quality for 48 hrs old.
I would definitely use him again on this mare and am planning to do so (if he is still in Europe) in 2012.
