Hi, I am new here, but think you guys will know the answer to this! My saddler has said that you cannot use brown tack once you get to a certain level in dressage. Does anyone know if this is a)true and b)what level it applies at?

Thanks!

Complete BS, you can use brown tack all the way to the olympics if you so wish...it's not "the norm" but there's no rule against it

Black is more usual, but if brown better suits your horse then I wouldn't worry - I'm guessing you're not wanting to go GP anyway..?

I cant find a picture that shows it but Im sure that i noticed before that Spencer Wilton rides Dolendo in brown tack, so that is definatly a load of rubbish!

You can use either. The only downside of brown dressage saddles is they are harder to sell secondhand than black ones. Some saddlers dont even bother to stock brown dressage saddles as they are hard to sell. Silly really as I suppose its just a fashion thing!

Theres just a big world shortage of brown dressage saddles, I spent months looking and gave up. I guess I'm the only one in the world that doesn't do black tack, IMO it looks cheap and fake....

Seconded, perhaps it's a showing thing but traditionally black tack was just used for harness horses.

BD rule 49 says

"Saddles must be of English or continental style and must be black, brown, grey or navy."

So he's talking cobblers, probably to get you to buy a new saddle!
