My niece is going to do her first freestyle dressage to music competition. The trouble is she has no idea what music to go with! Do you know anything that works quite well? She probably rides at around Novice level dressage approx

I would say she is fairly average striding (not much help I know!). She is a little 16hh TB and fairly elegant, but not an unexploded bomb by any means

I tend to stick to Classical, can find a tempo for any length of trot

Abba is also good...I have a completely unused CD of Abba music without lyrics made especially for dressage. Unlikely to ever be used by me

so I can pop it in the post if you're interested.

On the other hand, EVERYONE seems to say Abba is good, so if you choose that you may find that other people are using the same music as you.

Classical music is good but Classical with a Twist is even better. Below is a link for you to listen to some samples of music from a band called SKY. Fantastic musicians & their music is ideal. Listen to 'Tocata', 'Vivaldi' & 'Hotta', there are numerous other samples on this link aswell.

Good Luck

Thank you so much for the offer of the ABBA Cd, but unfortunately she lives in the USA so its probably not practical to get it there.

Toby - I tried the link, but it doesnt work? (tried all sorts of variations but no luck)

Thanks for all your help tho, I will pass your suggestions on!

As a judge who has had to sit through hours of these tests i have a couple of helpfull requests....
1. Please no Abba or Queen they are good but very over used
2. Not classical its BORING it does't do wellover most PA systems especially outside and please no classical music with
a drum beat!!!!
A few tips.Dressage to music should be about the horse working to the music, not be background music. You therefore need to get music that works for the horse at each of its paces and that suits his type and characture of both him and the rider! good sources are film and television . the next step is to get the horse videoed whilst doing walk trot and canter going through the movements i.e 20m circle in canter or 1/2 10m cicles in trot and then comparing the music with the movment. i try and keep a theme or story as this has flow even at the basic level.the editing of the music may need to be given to a person who is good at this kind of thing. there are examples of these people in the BD magazine they even have a booklet in the subject. the next step is to put a video of your free programe together. start with the entry then the halt.the time allowed starts from the moveoff from the first halt to the halt at the end of the test. Send this video and your music or details of your music and that will be your dressage to music . The more input the music person has the greater the cost. Dressage to music is fabulous at any level and when the music and the horse match it can be so wonderful to watch but cliche music that you hear over and over again can really be boring!!! Think outside the box and have imagination and have fun!!!
