Please Please can you give me some advice.
My horse has been getting more and more scurfy all around his mane, his body is very dry also and dusty.
I have been giving him veg oil for ages and i have seen no difference so maybe he need some thing stronger??
He does suffer with all the skin things i.e sweet itch and mud fever so not sure if that has got anything to do with it.
Free apple cake for all those that answer :D:D

my pony has sweetitch, my loan horse has mud fever/ rain scald both of them are very scurfy especially the pony at this time of year, not sure what can be done about it as he generally just gets less scurfy as winter draws in. He does have a camrosa bath at the end of summer and i brill cream his mane and brush it everyday for a fair while to remove the scurf this generally helps him not sure how much it is just him or if it does help!

Baby oil, my sweet itch ponies neck is usually very scurfy but baby oil is the best thing just make sure you massage it in well or avons aloe soft skin cream. I find micronised linseed or linseed oil better sof coat condition than veg oil.

I use T Gel shampoo from Superdrug, and Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil, diluted in final rinse. Just be careful about the saddle area- may make the saddle slip.

I have a black cob who is very hairy and has very coarse hair which makes coat greasy too, she gets very itchy but I can't put it down to sweet itch as she suffers all year round.

I keep her clipped out all year round which helps the itching, she gets a mug of grounded linseed in each of her two feeds from Simple System which helps condition the coat and make it shiny and I also no longer bath her in washing up liquid as it's too harsh but use a Supreme Products shampoo for dark horses that makes her gleam with health. It's about £14 a bottle but a little goes a long way although I think any horse shampoo is better than anything else.

I also bath her every few weeks as we show and hunt so I often give her a warm bath after hunting as there is no way the sweat and mud will brush out, I alway rug her well with my Thermatex after a bath so she doesn't get a chill.

I also try to keep her rugs clean and often put a summer sheet under turnouts so that I can stick those in the washing machine rather than large rug cleaning bills, so that she doesn't have anything dirty against her skin.

It maybe dietary as to why your horse is scurfy but I think my horse just suffers because of her type and colour so I try to manage it and it has made a difference.

Good luck!!

hey thank you for the replies that i have had paddy as actually been needing a bath but i have no sweat rug :o and weather here is so cold but i am waiting for a lovely day.

My horse is a friesian and so black and furry :D
i did buy sunflower oil today as a lady at my yard swears by it but i agree i am a big fan of linseed oil.
i will keep an eye out for it i know when i was in yorkshire i was unable to get it :( Worcester tack shops do seem to be better stocked lol

i have a mix up of benzo and caster oil and i rubbed that into him today. but i use baby oil lightly on his face as he is so dry
