If you are not allergic to it lots of wool lanolin will work wonders on leather but do be careful as it is well known for causing eczema in humans

neatsfoot is sold as it was used before the effects were known. why sell cakes if they are bad for your health?

Effax, stubben, abbey, jefferies all make good cleaning stuff that will also care for your tack long term

Pure Neatsfoot is fine, the effects of Neatsfoot with mineral products added has been known for many decades and this is the one to be wary of. I knew that 50 odd years ago.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but what should you use neatsfoot oil for then and why do they sell it if it is so bad for leather? When I was a kiddy we always used neatsfoot oil ( I don't think they sold anything else), is neatsfoot compound the same as neatsfoot oil? Sorry for all the questions but I am a returning "Lady of a Certain Age" rider.

It's bad for leather if you soak it in oil, which is OTT and ruins it, weakens the fibres and makes the leather weaker, a light coat of oil is a different matter. However, there are so many more modern alternatives nowadays that do a better job imo (there have always been alternatives to neatsfoot...many old favourites that do a better job too).
Also, you've got to remember that the quality of hides these days doesn't compare with the leather some of us grew up with, this is because cattle are slaughtered younger and so the hides aren;t the same. It could take a lot more abuse than todays leather can.
