Well I am gobsmacked by the attitude and disregard for safety of the driver's on the road this morning. My blood is boiled! My friend and I decided to hack to some local woods and on the way back pony was a bit full of himself due to all the excitement and threw a paddy on the road which links the bridleway to the woods. The traffic just carried on by. Both of us were using clear hand signals for the traffic to to stop and guess what...NO ONE stopped!!!One guy even had the cheek to 'wave' back to me whilst squeezing past my spinning horse and cutting up the driver coming the other way! Other people just flew past! Had a non horsey family member say well really we shouldn't have been there anyway!! hmm well horses were on the roads first and if anyone even looks at the highway code..THEREE ARE RULES!.

Sorry to rant but sooo angry still!

I know exactly how you feel!! our roads are very quiet but we do get the odd nutta well i say odd i seem to encounter all of them. Cisco has one of those equisaftey exercise sheets with the bib and leg bands and i have a tabbard!! but people still drive extremly close to me and at stupid speed once i was out on a little road ride as Cisco was a bit fresh! and theres a ford that goes under the road and i signaled the driver to go slowly he took no notice and Cisco jumped sideways at the ford and then sideways again when he nearly sat on the car i fell off and the guy just carried on. Luckly i wasn't hurt :D

But honestly some people don't realise that actually if the horse sat on there car they would get hurt too! and its not usualy the car there scared of its normally and drain or some different coloured grass :)

Things will never change! It doesnt seem to matter what goes on on the roads, some drivers will never slow down.
As long as you did everything right, asking for them to slow down, trying to take control, being visable, then think lucky thoughts that everything is ok.

Yes, was wearing hi viz and so was pony!part of the reason i'm so angry as i was playing by the rules lol! defo glad all ok. Is nice to be able to rant to people who understand as I am only horsey person in family and so others just shrugged it off.

The secret is to wear long sleeved Hi-Viz jackets so that other road users can clearly see your hand signals.
If you want a vehicle to stop point at the driver of the vehicle you want to stop for 3 seconds and then hold up the palm of your hand towards them. This normally does the trick.

know exactly how you feel. I've got a new boy and had him out on his first real ride today (purposly done on a Sunday when roads are quieter) only for some idot ramblers to scramble over a fence off of private land no more than 10ft in front of us, despite us ending up facing the wrong way in the middle of the road cars still carried on trying to squeeze past :confused::confused:

... that said though there were two lovely people that stopped so holding up the rest of the traffic, sad thing is it really only took us less than 30 secs to get sorted but few are prepared to wait that long these days

(yes I was wearing a lot of hi viz too!)

I've been in the same situation!

Thankfully last time I went out, we had a fantastic lorry driver ^^ It was a narrow road and the horse infront was just learning to lead the ride. The lorry comes around the corner and I think "Oh no" but he slows quietly and turns off his engine, pulling as far over as he could :D We got passed with no trouble what so ever! That driver really made my day :D

It's not just whilst you're on a horse. People are just hopeless. Last night I was driving home from my friends and the village is traffic is subject to calming measures.

There is an island with a give way for one direction and priority for the other. So I had priority and carried on and some idiot coming the other way felt the need to laser out my eyes with his hi beam because he had to stop. At a give way which was signed clearly and had the appropriate road markings too. wtf? It's like people can't follow simple road instructions or something.

At least you and pony made it home in one piece but that really can't have been much fun. I think all you can do is sigh and try to ignore them because I really think some people won't ever learn :(

There are some idiots around. Works both ways I suppose as had two riders riding on main road today no hi viz middle of the road yacking away. Didn't even acknowledge me as I slowly drove past.

I'm leading my 2 year old out on the roads at the moment. Shes fantastic and has never bothered about the traffic, but last week I took her a different way, on a slightly busier road. Some ponies in a field started farting around and my little one got a bit wound up. I always wear a hard hat and a high vis vest with the word "caution" on the back of it. I tried putting my hand up in a "stop" sign, tried waving it up and down and the only ones who slowed down were the young drivers. The middle aged ones and the elderly ones just carried on by. I think young drivers are sometimes wrongly accused of bad driving!! I also think it's because my youngster is only about 13.2hh that they think she won't do anything. Last summer when I was long-reining my nutty mare out, they slowed down all the time....she's 16.2hh of gorgeous dark bay and I think the size definitely makes a difference.

I'm afraid it works both ways. No one round here wears hi viz (apart from me ;)) they hack out in the rush hour, on icey roads, two or three abreast and then give loads of abuse when drivers get impatient. Unfortunately, its riders like you and me that bear the brunt of other riders bad behaviour.
