Quick question folks!

I'm a post 97 driver so only entitled to drive up to 3.5 ton. If I were to drive a 6.5 ton how do you go about it? Would I be able to learn with L plates and someone who is entitled to drive one sat with me? (it would be my mother who is entitled by default having driven for years!)

I understand you have to apply for a provisional but thats as far as my knowledge goes!

BTW - this is all hypothetical at the moment but seen a lovely box for sale and I'm trying to weigh up wether it would all be possible or too much of a faff.

thanks!

You'd have to get formal lessons from a training centre.

The law is about to change (I think in April) so that only drivers who have passed a formal test can act as an accompanying driver. Grandfather rights don't work for that any longer, so your mother can't sit with you.

Yup, formal lessons I'm afraid. You'll need a medical before you can get your provisional licence. It'll probably cost you about £1k, including test, to get your full licence.
