Driving a lorry/trailer on icy roads

Today two of my (normally wussy) fellow liveries went places, one in a small lorry, one in a trailer, down our very long drive which was a total ice rink, with a particularly nasty sharp bend that was a skid pan (my corsa struggled round it!). I couldn't ride today as horse was off, but even if I could have done, I had planned to wait until the afternoon when it thawed out (it didn't, but I would have been ok on the verges). I really wouldn't have fancied chancing it in my lorry - but all were fine, going out and coming back. Am I being over cautious??

no not at all,i work for a accident and mechanical breakdown company,we have had numerous accidents today some very serious,its down to the indevidual but its better to be safe than sorry and if you feel anxious i think it makes it worse

i avoid transporting horses at all costs in icy weather, so only really for the vet.

Depends. Presumably going very slowly, if the lorry slid would it just go as far as slightly onto a verge/into a fence or hedge? If that's the case its probably worth risking to get the horses out. If the track has got a ditch or a downhill slope beside it it could be disastrous if the lorry slid off he track and not worth the risk IMO.

No you are not being over cautious just sensible and aware of the risks of driving on icy roads.

I travelled my girl yesterday. it was quite icy but the lorry and horse where ok. I just took it steady!

Only in an absolute emergency would I consider risking icy road, ditto windy conditions.

I did go out yesterday, but waited until gone 11 for it to warm up and took it very carefully - there was one small patch of ice on the private road out of the yard but then the roads were fine.

I also made sure I was home before the temperatures started to drop.

Had the roads been icy, then I would not have gone out competing.
