I'm currently breaking my pony to drive, she's happily pulling a tyre around the roads now, fine over various terrain, good to voice commands etc. So think we're ready for the next step. Only we've had varying opinions over what to use.

So what do you use to get them used to the shafts? And how do you use them?

Thanks :)

When I had my horse broken to drive, they used a very light weight training carriage to get him used to it, there again I did send him away to be trained. Then once we knew he was fine I bought my 4 wheel exc carriage.

I used some thin lengths of wood to replicate shafts and held them up behind. The most important thing I believe someone suggested was to tie elastic from the breeching strap to the tugs so that the pony got used to pressure from those breeching straps. Apparently it's not an uncommon cause to freak out the pony as they are not used to pressure there. Good luck. Driving is such good fun.
