Driving

It's something I've never done and would love to give it a go but have no idea where I would be able to try it and learn how to drive.

There's a lady somewhere near by who takes a couple of Shetties out through the village on a Sunday morning and it looks like a lovely way to travel. Any advice? Otherwise I may be forced to follow the shetties home and stalk their owner until she teaches me. I'm worried that might make me look odd though!

Driving is amazing! I work at the National Trusts Arlington Court Stables and Carriage collection in devon and have done for the past 8 years, we run lessons (never for more than 3 people) and do whats called "experience carriage driving" days or taster days, they're brillant to get an insight. It starts with tea and a chat, theres normally 12-14 people on each day, then we split up, some go on the reining machine to learn how to handle single reins and others learn to harness up, then the day varies a little but everyone gets at least a 10minute drive of one of our horses, a tour of the carriage collection (it is the trusts collection and has over 50 vehicals) a long lining demo, lunch, a QandA session. This is about £45 (i think) and you get the pleasure of me teaching! lol probs shouldnt advertise on here but they book up pretty early and we do 5/6 a year and this year we're starting a lvl 2 day which is a bit more advanced but without the price tag of a normal lesson.

Alot of yards run days like this along with normal lesson although you dont get groups like a ridden lesson. Contact the british driving society for a list of instructors and I have noticed that my corner shop has started stocking Carriage driving magazine so maybe the biger chains have too. alway a good read. Any book by Sallie Walrond is great too, she even does those threshold picture guides now!

Driving is great and growing in popularity very fast. As suggested, look at the BDS website. You could also join the Carriage driving website where there may be local people willing to give you a taster and be able to recommend Instructors near you.
