Ok so left my horse for about 2 weeks with no bit in. Dentist said her roof upper palate was swollen, can be sinus problems still not sure what it is? She is bright eating good condition and full of beans in herself, no snot or mucus. Rang the vet who said it just happens isn't the bit causing it as different place. but somethings wrong as she is drooling all over the place when she has her bit in. Walked up the road today and was rather frothy. Her roof is all squishy and soft and looks like her tongue is squished up against the roof if you get me! Argh going to call vet now as not sure she's in pain or just uncomfortable? I have never seen this nor has my yard owner.

Horses can get molar teeth appearing in the most odd places in the skull. I wonder if this is what your horse is suffering with?

My friend's clydesdale had this on one side and had the tooth removed from his skull and he now has one on the other side.

I would be inclined to get an x-ray.

not sure, but horse at yard does actually drool but appears to just be him, he drools at feed time etc. he windsucks but not sure if thats something to do with it.

What bit do you use?
If she has a low palate ie not alot of room in her mouth then a single joint will be uncomfortable for her and she may have trouble swallowing with a bit in. I would recommmend a double joint like a french link as this won't interfere with her palate.
Alternatively, if she has a sore tongue or palate then she may be having trouble swallowing hence the drooling.

I use a pelham with a port and have done for the last year with no drooling only the last month she has the drooling always has a lipstick foam but not loads of spit. She isnt to happy in a jointed bit or a happy mouth as tried loads seemed better in a straight bar with a port as she has a large mouth.

How do you know if a horse has a low palate? She is always mouthy when the bit is in.

I am so baffled by this as there are hardly any reasons she would have it.

Could she have food wedged between her top teeth somewhere? Or a bit of twig or something sharp that she's tried to eat could have pierced her palate. Could still be lodged there, making her mouth sore and setting up an infection which would make the roof of her mouth soft and squishy. Does she crib? Does her breath smell? Does she drop bits of food as she's eating? Sherlock Holmes time!

It could well be an infection of some kind. This happened to one of my ponies. Her tongue swelled so much she couldn't swallow and just stood there drooling.
A course of antibiotics soon cleared it up. Vet thought she'd either been stung or swallowed something sharp like a hawthorn or something.

well I thought that the more I tried to work it out maybe its a hawthorn or a twig. Breath is fine no smelly infection, she does do a weird thing I thought she was eating her poo but its like cud she drops bit of unchewed food and makes a weird face like trying to get it out of her cheeks bits of mashed hay on floor looks like poo! Any ideas? She only drools when bit is in.. never used to ever still on the shall I shan't i get vet?

I think perhaps she might be getting an abcess under a tooth which is why she has developed eating differently and the bit will be uncomfortable too.
Or she may have a sore tooth with a crack in it.
I think really you should get your vet or horse dentist out asap, she may be in quite some discomfort.

its not when shes eating shes not quidding eats fine I watch all the time, its ages after eaten old chewed bits either that or shes eating poo! It was the dentist who noticed the palate she has looked already and didn't say much else totally baffled!

Had vet out he said as much as I said! Bute for a week see if the swelling goes down if it is still there he said about xrays but seems a bit severe as she is so well in herself arghhhh maybe Il try a new bit...
