following on from another post this morning about a worcester noseband, cany ou use a drop nose band with a full cheek peanut snaffle? reason i ask is i currently ride my mare in a flash as she opens her mouth and runs off when out in company but i really dont like flashesand feel mean. would a drop noseband help? i think she would def be happier without a flash but its finding a nice alternative thats the trouble.
 
Yes a drop is far superior to a flash and may well sort you mare out and yes you can use it with a full cheek snaffle

fabby! i was hoping someone would say that. now all i need to know is how to fit it with a full cheek with keepers. I HATE TACK!!! far too many options! lol
 
My mare HATED a flash, tried it once as she was getting a bit 'gobby' and she wouldnt settle at all... Took her cavesson noseband off completely and she was loads better. We're off to her first show at the weekend and I need a noseband on for the showing classes etc, so tried her in a drop and she was great!

I think they are one of the underestimated bits of tack - I have never met a horse yet that didnt go well in one.....
 
I've got a vague recollection from the dim and distant that I used to have a drop with keepers somehowe incorporated into it?
Or has that now got a fancy name and I'm making a twerp of myself?
 
both ours have drop nosebands ,the difference in the pony is remarkable, taylor can now hack/school & jump her on the snaffle ring of her gag..before that she was ridden on the second hole for everything.
 
i don't understand the problem of using a drop with a full-cheek bit with keepers... i use this combination on every horse in the yard, unless they really don't need the drop, in which case they have a cavesson.
i always use keepers on a full-cheek bit, to keep the bit absolutely stable and stop it from rotating.
according to my trainer, this is the combination they use on every young horse at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, before they go on to double bridles.
As long as it is fitted correctly (4 fingers' width above top of nostril) the drop noseband doesn't have to be tight to be effective, and most horses much prefer it to a flash or grackle, which feels more restrictive.
 
I think drop nosebands are vastly underused with a preference for the flash. However, many people do need to learn how to fit them correctly!!
