I've had a pony on full loan for 3 weeks now, we've had a lot of teething problems as he's trying it on quite a bit, seems to be playing the "who's in charge around here??" Game a lot. I've just been dealing with issues as they arise but as he gets more confident it seems he tries a lot more!
He's started dropping his outside shoulder, as if he was spooking, then bucking. The first time I assumed it was a spook but after the 5th time (all in different parts of the school) I was feeling a bit less sympathetic!
He seems to do it when asked to go forward, and when he can see other horses in their field across from the outdoor school. I rode him in the indoor this morning and he didn't try anything, but it makes me a little nervous as I wonder if I'd stay on if he did it in canter! (He's coming back into work so we're at the walk/trot stage). I have been making him move on afterwards and not stopping work until we get a trot with no silliness.
Any advice on stopping this? He's had a physio out and it's nothing back related. Could it just be excitement? He spent 7 years on a private stables where he only ever saw 2 other horses and was ridden in a field, and he's come to my yard which is huge, has 3 schools and about 40 horses. So is the scene change a likely cause? If it's just his way of saying he wants to be with the other horses I will at least know I can push him on safely! I'm terrified of bolters and when he does it he feels as though he's about to bolt so I'm worried about it escalating.
I asked the owner and she knows he bucks in excitement but has never seen it combined with shoulder dropping before!
