Hi all, noticed recently since the hot weather that Merlyns hooves are becoming really dry and have started chipping more than cracking. Anyone else suffered? It was only 3 weeks ago that I had the farrier out to trim him. I plastered a load of cornecresine on last night to try and moisturise them lol. Any advice?

My farrier came last night and I asked him about a crack which has appeared on my boys hoof, he said to put Aqueous cream on his hooves x

Kevin Bacon hoof grease. Usually I can get away with applying every few days but its been so dry I have to put it on daily else my little madam tips the water bucket out to make a wet patch to stand in.

I'm loving the dry, hard ground; the horses' hooves are like rock. If you're having trouble I'd consider nutrition before clogging up the hoof wall with gunk.

moisturise from the inside out, cold hose the foot every other day for 2-3mins, oils etc are just synthetic on the outside and can actually stop the wet dew from the grass penetrating the hoof from the outside.

if you have a horse with shoes on and the shoes are a bit loose, cold hose the feet the clenches will become tight because the foot swells with the moisture from the water. no need to lose shoes.

I was talking to a farrier about this the other day and he said to put Kevin Bacon around the top of the hoof helps moisture also saying there is no point putting on at bottom as that is dead hoof.

Another plug for Kevin Bacon hoof dressing. It lasts for ages, I've had a small tub for 2 years now and it's still got loads left.
