Dry hay and no water overnight???

I would contact the WHW or the Welfare Department of the BHS and let them deal with the gentleman concerned as this is a welfare issue.
 
Thanks everyone for your input, have just spoken to the YO and she is pretty cross about it!

She's going to speak to the guy, but she has also given me the go ahead to fill up his bucket if necessary and has said that we'll just not tell him we've done it if he's going to be awkward.

If only this guy would take some advise, but he is the sort who knows everything (if only!!) and gets really uppity if you try to help.

Such a shame for the horse, he deserves better than this. :(
 
I would confront the owner again about the issue and when faced with the same attitude would just say "not a problem, I'll give WHW a ring in the morning - if I were you I would expect a visit" then calmly walk away. Sounds like a complete ********.
 
Forgot to say, troughs in the field are fine, not frozen or contaminated, so think its just a case of hardly any water being put in the stable.
 
Yes I too would have to keep filling the horses water, that is disgusting, he is putting his horse at a serious risk of colic, very sad indeed that there are owners of horses out there like this. If he does not sort it I would be inclined to report him also

Now that the YO knows, it's they that should be ensuring the horse has water on their evening checks.
 
YO doesn't do evening checks, its all DIY and she doesn't live on site, so its more a case of whoever happens to be there last.
That is invariably me as I get my horse in at 4-30, with a small net, but come back again at 7-30 to give him the rest of his hay as I don't want him to go too long overnight with nothing.
He's a fatty so can't have ad lib.

The YO and this awkward chap get theirs in at around 5 ish and then don't come back until the next morning. The other 2 liveries live out and are given hay when the others come in.

I really don't mind doing it at all, its a small, friendly yard (or was, before this guy pitched up!!) where we all try to help each other.

I'll keep an eye on it, and if it happens frequently, I'll ask YO, who's lovely, to lay down the law with him. Thanks for all your help everyone, hopefully it wont happen again. :)

Actually YO has a duty of care - regardless of livery type, to all animals on her land. So if she's aware of the situation she is responsible for it. ie, filling water or reporting.
Be careful not to get in a bad situation if he catches you out doing this.

I used to run a small yard and in the winter all the pipes froze and water had to be taken up in containers, this was a DIY yard and so everyone was responsible for making sure there horse had water but when the weather was bad noone else bothered to get containers so I bought an extra four (already had two) and filled them up at home and took them to the yard twice a day and made sure every horse had water. I dont like seeing horses with nothing to eat for 12 hours, water is a basic requirement and horses should always have access to it at all times, perhaps he needs to read his pony club manual!

I also don't think it is acceptable that whether a horse gets water relies upon some DIY liveries checking while they are doing their own horse. If the YO isn't prepared to take responsibility for checking then she needs to tell this livery in no uncertain terms that he needs to provide water 24 hours a day and if he fails to do so take action (I would suggest a financial charge added to his bill every time the YO has to top up the water).

Alternatively if he fails to obey her order that the horse have access to water 24/7 she reports him to WHW/BHS herself.
 
Having run a small DIY yard I think it's best just to move such people on if they don't toe the line quickly they upset the atmosphere of a yard and it's just not worth it.
It was on the list of rules that the YO gave people when they arrived sufficent water must be given to last overnight like they say stupid is forever sometimes.
 
Why on earth would someone mind someone topping up their horse's empty water bucket??? *Scratches head*

You say he's a novice, so it's unlikely he's dehydrating the horse to calm it down. He just sounds like a numpty. Poor you. Poor horse. Stupid man! :mad:
