My 28 year old pba has a problem with dry cracked heels, but this only appears to happen in Summer when its warm and dry so nothing like typical cracked heels. They become very scabby and when scabs removed it is very sore and red underneath causing lameness and a lot of discomfort.

His heels seem to grow strange fungus like growths and nothing seems to work, we've tried udder cream, protocon ointment, hibiscrub, washing, drying etc.

All mud fever remedies keep water out and we need to keep water in! The farrier has never seen anything like it so if anyone has any experience of anything similar please let me know as this has gone on for a long long time.

Thanks

My warmblood had something similar and the farrier recommended Caneston Cream / clotmirazole (sp) cream (sold by chemists for athletes foot or human thrush). Cleared it up in no time.

We've tried cornucrescine a long time ago and didn't seem to work, its just such a strange problem and noone seems to know anything about it, vet included!

good idea about the caneston cream, as it seems to be a fungal thing... will give it a try and let you know

Thanks everyone
