My NF mare is 5, and has always been barefoot, last few days noticed her hooves look dry and flaky right at the bottom of her hoof.

She was only trimmed a couple of weeks back.

Any idea? Just weather change?

Shy's the same - farrier last week said it was what I thought - the complete lack of rain. The hooves will soak up moisture from the ground, and when there isn't any...

So we go down to the river a couple of times a week, and get his hooves soaked. Or you could try hosing them down ? I hate to put any hoof oil on his feet, but I guess there is always the "daily moisture" one - Cornuscrene (sp ??) if you feel he needs it.

Mind you, the way this country is, we'll probably have so much rain soon, things will sort themselves out, eh ;).

there was a post about aqueous cream being good? I haven't tried it but am thinking of it now. Apparently it's about a quid for a pot from the chemist?

I use the daily moisturiser (cornucresine) and also hose the feet when really dry. In the summer months i also make the beds (shavings) a bit damp on top which seems to help.

aqueos cream all the way, one of mine has terrible feet and even my farrier couldnt believe the change in them after using it, I usually use it once a month or twice this month with all the dry weather

Another vote for aqueous (sp?) cream. I've found it gives the same results as 'Hoof Moist' but is about a quarter of the price.
