so 9 days of wet poulticing has finally got all the pus out! How long should I dry poultice for? the farrier is coming on saturday, is he likely to be ready for a shoe back on by then? anything else I should be doing, ie. should I start walking him around the yard with no poultice to get his foot used to it again?

Am a little concerned as he is still a little bit lame (no heat or swelling anywhere?) - could it just be his foot is sore after all the wet poulticing? dry poultices are quite bulky, could that be annoying him?

Vet basically said to see how it goes, as the lameness has improved a lot now the abcess is clear?

Sorry for all the Q's, its so long since I last had to deal with an abcess, and never had one this bad?!

I usually just use Gamgee, it helps the foot harden up again. Can leave it on for as long as you like/until farrier gets there.
How sound they are with a double layer of gamgee will usually be the same level of soundness with a shoe on.

I left a dry poultice on Grace until my farrier came and put the shoe back on... about a week I think

I dry poulticed for a couple of days of hot pouticing. As soon as I was sure there was absolutely no muck in the hole, I plugged the hole with iodine soaked cotton wool. The gamgee idea sounds like a good one thoug.
