Just gave Sidney (standard Poodle x Bedlington..very thick curly coat!) his annual shaved to the skin cut and this year I was shocked to see his skin under his coat is very dry and quiet sore in places!! He's such a easy going dog he's not once shown he's been in discomfort..which he obviously must have been because he's very red and itchy in places, I feel awful for him!!! So can anyone suggest something I can either put on his skin (I've just used Aloe Vera as that's what I had on hand after shaving him yesterday) or something I can add to his diet to help with his skin? He gets cod liver oil every other day as it is.

You could give him some sardines in tomato, mine gets them every morning

For the soreness aloe vera is good, see how it goes maybe need something from the vet in case it gets infected if the skin is broken

Or you could try Dermagel spray or gel, its non toxic

Bathing the wounds in salt water ?

Salt water is covered...he dunks in the sea most mornings!! :D The skins not broken it's just inflamed and he's not actually scratching it's just if I touch him he'll squirm abit and last night he was rolling on the bedroom carpet..but that might have just been because of being shaved!! Must admit took the shave abit closer (it's skinned to be honest!) than I would usually but last summer had to do 2 cuts and really don't want to this year because his winter coat didn't grow in time. Poor bugger he's such a good boy I hate to see him unhappy. Got some anti-itch cream from the pound shop so that might help too. Will try sardines but might have a problem if they all want some..can't afford 6 dogs having it everyday!! Lol!

My spangle has similar - vet said it was atopic dermatitis. Whenever he gets a bout, we bathe him in malaseb shampoo. Vet also prescribed fuciderm (sp) cream when he had a particularly uncomfortable bout. It clears up pretty quickly.

If you go to the beach most mornings, maybe its the sand thats irritating him ? if its built up over time maybe ? I hate sand gets everywhere

Ohh never thought of that...I hate it too, my house crunches when you walk it in despite being hoovered all the time! Lol!

I'm not sure if it's just purely because he's got too hot and I've not clipped him quickly enough. He's never had it before and he's clipped every year (he's 8) so I think it's maybe because he's over heated and with a double coat it's caused problems. I smoothered him in Aloe Vera last night (queue one dead throw because he rolled on it!!) and he's 100 times better this morning so I'm hoping it's gone. Poor bugger he's bald and rashy...normally such a pretty dog but right now he does look like he's got some dreadful disease!! Lol!!

Cruel mummy!!
