With all this dry weather, my boy's hooves have gone incredibly dry and they're cracking a bit :( He usually has awesome feet, but I can only assume that this dry weather is causing them to crack. I have my farrier coming along on Monday as he is due for a trim. I was just wondering what everyone uses to keep their horse's hooves in good condition, more particularly moisturised? I've been using Kevin Bacon but I feel that it's actually making them worse and I've been told to avoid "Oils".

Any help would be really appreciated!

I overflow the water troughs so there is a muddy patch in the field - they are drinking often so their feet are getting wet / muddy regularly - it's not perfect but I think it helps a bit.

I got complimented by my farrier yesterday for the condition of my boys feet. I use (bog standard) aqueous cream once a week and if I'm hosing him down I also give his hooves a good blast.

These are some fantastic tips!!! Thanks so much guys. I've never heard of using Aqueous cream before!

Car dat and martin do a hoof moisturiser that is basically aqueous cream with tea tree added to it if you want to DIY!
I use effol stuff at the moment though.

I'm using NAF's hoof moist. Brushing it on in the evenings as barefoot hind feet are chipping a bit on the hard ground. It seems to be helping.

I forget to turn the hose off to my trough on a daily basis, which seems to be doing a great job of keeping their feet moisturised!

My farrier said the best thing for dry feet is water, so I sponge water over mine that have issues twice daily. I’ve also just started 3 of them on formula for feet as they are particularly bad. Using oils stops moisture getting to the feet which is the worst thing possible.

Kevin Bacon seems to do a good job I use it daily on 2 tbs however back in the day my Grandad swore by goose fat or lard plastered on hooves. Funnily enough Kevin Bacon smells just like that!

My two haven't had anything put on their feet for about 10 years and they are uber shiny and in fabulous condition. My trimmer told me not to bother with any creams and that condition comes from the inside. How right she was! They look polished.

Effol summer hoof gel, been putting it on daily for for weeks now because i was determined not to have cracked hooves this year and so far its working but maybe twice a day going forward at the moment!
