Drying out thrush prone frogs

Rock is prone to thrush and his frogs are disgusting, really soft and squidgey and getting holes in them. Hibiscrub made it worse as it made it wet. Have used athletes foot spray which was fantastic but hes become immune to it. Am using purple spray but not sure if this will help
Any suggestions?
 
Terramycin Spray. That's what I use routinely every now and then over summer and once or twice a week all through the muddy winter. Touch wood, Patches hasn't had thrush in over 12 months.

It's a sheep foot rot spray that we keep in to help with the dairy cows feet after pairing for foul of the foot. Fabulous stuff. Only downside is that it's vivid blue, which isn't so good when your horse is white/grey and you miss and get it up the back of her leg! (I'm very good at having the nozzle turned the wrong way for some reason when I spray D'oh)

Edited to add: An old farrier remedy is to make up a lime sock and dust it onto the foot. We have lime here for disinfecting the cubicles every few days when the cows are winter housed. It's like talcum powder. I have in the past popped some in a sock and dusted it by tapping it against her foot. Gave up when she stopped being scared of the aerosol being sprayed on her feet (the terramycin)
 
Yes Wools has had dreadful thrush. Got this Life Science data stuff, cant actually recall its name and I still use it once a week! Its a dark liquid, shake it and you shake ie on all over the hooves. Great stuff, got it from farrier although you can buy it in horsey shop.
 
I've found that if they are really wet then it helps to bandage on dry animalintex for a couple of nights to really draw out all the gunk.

My cob gets thrush in winter so I use diluted Hydrogen peroxide which you can get from the chemist think it's 9% solution - its quite cheap! Just squirt it onto the frogs ( don't go mad) once a day for a couple of days - thats all I do and it seems to work for my cob. You might be aswell to keep your horsey in for 24 hours. Hope this helps?!?!?
 
Always use Hydrogen peroxide on mine, hold the feet up and let it fizz - brill stuff keeps them nice and healthy. Was also told by farrier to use it in his abcess holes, it seems ot have worked
 
Hydrogen peroxide, I get the cream hydrogen Peroxide from my friendly local hairdresser and squirt that on. Once the infection has gone I use the purple sheep foot rot spray every day and then peroxide once a week. Also make sure their bed is really clean and dry as the ammonia doesn't help the healing or drying out.
 
once the worst has cleared up use eucalyptus oil on his frog and sole every day, it really is brill for frog health and is a natural antiseptic always works well for thrush.
 
To dry them out, how about use the ultra absorbant bedding (equisorb...?) - lots of people have trouble with it drying out their horses feet but in your case, it's probably what you want!

A friend of mine did this and it worked really well

my boys just recovering form horrid thrush- half his frogs fell off as i was using hibiscub and it made them go all soft and gunky. Used hydrogen peroxide twice a day for a week and got some oxytetracycline spray from the vet.

It's been 2 weeks now have gone through 6 bottles of peroxide and 4 cans of spray but frogs hard as nails, no sign of thrush and all growing back nicely. I dried out his feet and squirted peeroxide on with a syringe , left it to work and bubble and then dried his feet off.

Finished off with the blue stuff. Only problem is that you have to get spray on prescription now from the vet and they'll only give me 2 cans at a time which doesn't last very long
(unless anyone knows where to get it without a prescription????) . Let that dry and then turned him back out again.

Hope yours improves soon- its so gross first thing in the morning!!
 
Peroxide treats the thrush - but to use a prevention - coat the hoof in stokholm tar once a week - it's fantastic at keep the hoof clean beneath all the mud/stable dirt etc!

Newforester....try Hyperdrug (Equine Pharmacy). I think its marketed as foot rot spray for sheep but its the same blue stuff.
 
Could you use talcum powder on it? I used it on my horses legs when it had mud fever, helped dry it up quicker before I put on usual cream. And could you buy one of those poultice boots? It would hopefully keep the hoof clean and dry.
 
I have found peroxide good. I also have used the blue foot rot spray - excellent. Cheap and effective preventative is salt water with a few drops of tea tree and eucalyptus oil added - I use 5 drops of each to 3 table spoons of salt and a pint of warm water.

Best preventative I have found is stockholm tar - it is pesty stuff to apply - but thanks to those wonderful people on H&H have found that if you put the tub in a bowl of very hot water it goes runny or you can mix it with a little veggie oil to thin it is far easier to use - can get everywhere and is a pig to remove from concrete.

I also get it in spray form - which is good but not as good as apply the stuff in the tub with a brush.

Also ask your farrier to trim them well next time he has his feet done.

I have found Cairo's feet hardly ever suffer now since he had his shoes off, nor does he have problems with excessive amount of frog.
 
Just an add-on here, and take it or leave it but once the thrush has cleared up, there is a trail of thought over here to refrain from picking the hooves out (so long as your fields are dry) as the initial compacted dirt seals the foot and does not allow any germs in.

I guess it may be different over here though as we don't really have any mud and the ground is very dry.
 
Excellent thanks you guys for all your suggestions they're brilliant! I shall start using the hydrogen peroxide (as i already have some) and will also look into this blue foot rot spray. I have a 'pine tar spray' which works the same as stockholm tar at sealing the area so will put that on also!

A good salt water wash would help cleanse too, if you run out of other stuff and need something. My girl is thrush prone and i have found a good salt water soak works wonders, also using tea tree hoof oil on and around the frog,also fresh frog is good stuff, it has tea tree in it i think,these can help prevent,they have done with my mare
