Dually halter?

Our 5 month old filly has a very bad leg injury and is being attended by the vet. However she is quite stroppy with him when he tends her wound. We are currently using a standard leather halter, but would a dually halter be more appropriate to use with her? Does anyone have any experience of using a dually halter with a foal?

Ive not used one on a foal, but do use it with my yooungster. However, I have found it much better for leading manners than standijg still manners. Its ok if shes just being a bit fidgety like with the farrier, but when she is really stressed like when the vet is doing her teeth the dually just tends to exacerbate the situation.

Hate the things, however they have their fans so obviously they do work.

I personally would not use one on a foal that age, it depends, how big is the foal, how well handled is she?

We have had this very scenario, and my Vet simply lightly sedated the foal to see to him. Less stress all round.

So, no, sorry, I haven't used one.

I hope, whatever restraint you use, that she recovers well.

I am a fan of Monty but I'm not keen on duallys. They're incredibly expensive for what they are and a horsemans halter for a lot less works as well. I wouldn't personally use one on a foal, I think for treatment by the vet sedation would be better as I agree with other posters that any similar type of halter for treatment is likely to exacerbate the situation, especially as you haven't used this type of halter prior to her injury. I'm not a huge fan of sedation but sometimes this really is the best option. Best of luck with her x

They are good if used properly. I would not use one on a horse under two years though. This was advise given by a RA.
The bones in a foals face/head are delicate and could be damaged.

I do use a dually and find it effective - but I'd not put it on young stock at all. As the above poster has said until they have full growth I'd worry about stressing the bones of the head by putting that sort of pressure on them. Sedation might be better - she doesn't need any more bad memories of this than you can help and it might affect her training later?
