Dually Halters - are they any good?

I love my dually halter I use it every day for my bargy cob.


She knows when when i don't use it.... she can go whever she likes in in a normal halter and drags me around..

put the dually on and she does everything i ask no hesitation.

i gues with all the comments you won;t really know how your horse will react to it...it maybe brilliant..there again it may not.

I suggest borrowing one first or try to pick up a second hand one off ebay...
 
jhoward, if your horse had a pattern of rearing to avoid situations, then it was quite likely to come out with loading, even if he hadn't used it in that particular situation.

Having said that, I've yet to find a situation that can't be resolved without a Dually, special bit or any type of pressure halter. Sometimes it may be that I need a better trainer than me to help, but never anything other than a rope halter. (Not a BeNice!).

Oh, yes, I have a dually halter - home made, I just thread the leadrope around horse's face and through the noseband of headcollar, much cheaper and works pretty much the same

But, they are a really usefull piece of kit for all sorts of situations.......... get one Jess, I'm sure you'll find it handy.

R.e. the rope halters, I use these all the time on my horses as everyday head collars, but for training where you might meet some 'resistance' from the horse, I've found that the knot may slip and they loosen off. A dually is very secure in those types of situation.
 
I got rid of my dually cos I didn't think it released well enough. We now have a Richard Maxwell rope halter which IMO is superior to the Dually.
 
I found the dually halter very useful my lad walks straight on the box now after a small protest as he cant be seen to be doing something he is told!
 
Have on love it wouldn't be with out it, but you MUST learn how to use it and teach the horse how to use it or it will not work. I have loaded many non loaders with it and currently have a rather highly stung horse on box rest and its one ofthe only things i can lead her out in (runs though bridle ignores chain rubs rope off nose). Some horses may rear at first as they are learning bounderys they have (or not) tried to brake before soem pruessre halters are much stronger and very likleyto cause horse to rear andgo over backwards so be careful if using a differnt one. but big thumbs upfrom me

Cutting a long story short...I use one on my big bolshy gelding. Used to have to use it all of the time, now just for loading. He came to me in a chifney, which I hate, he now does things in either a normal headcollar or a Dually.

Make sure you learn how to use it though. You need to make sure you're releasing at the right time. It didn't just cure my horse's loading probs straight away though, I had to learn some other exercises to do if he did just plant his feet and refuse to go in. TBH it's less about the Dually IMHO and more about the groundwork that you do with it.

Any halter is as severe as the person hanging on to the end of it.

I dislike the dually as in my opinion they are cumbersome and don't release quickly enough. Most I have seen are fitted far to low on the horses nose and far too tight with the handler hanging onto the end of it.......... Give me a light knotted rope halter any day... and if that dosn't work...... a stallion ring will stop an elephant as a last resort!!!!!!!!!!
