Hi All,

My lovely big girl who has so much potential hasn't learnt her manners and is a little head strong.

She is gorgeous in so many ways and we are very early days (I haven't had her very long at all) but she will benefit from some gentle / natural training.

Leading her is "interesting", she has some attention problems eg. the world is much more interesting and if we spot something we will stop NOW!!

She wants to be in charge of pace and direction. At the moment I am turning her in circles

She has a case of the fidgets and hasn't learnt to stand still yet, she has a similar problem with halt when long reigning. I can get her to plant her front feet by old nose to shoulder routine for a second or 2 and we are improving with lots of positive reinforcement.

At the moment she's seems to have a case of equine ADHA, she needs time and patience and I have plenty of both to give her

Having said all that, I'm worried about her leading issues particularly as I have to lead her from paddock to school along a road. in total honesty I do not have control of her safety or that of other people when leading her to the school.

We clearly need to do a lot of ground / lead work and building trust etc and we have made a start on that.

I do prefer more "gentle / natural" methods don't misunderstand I'm no push over but I just think time, patience, partnership and asking is best where ever possible.

All that said, I am thinking about getting a Dually for her, but I don't have anyone that can give me opinions on them? Its not like I can borrow one from a friend or yard mate!

I was thinking she would mostly like be medium - but measuring her may be "fun". She´s a full size bridle

God I´m making her sound awful she´s not. She didn´t have the best of starts in life and she is a project horse.

We have a dually for our Exmoor who can be a tricky loader. Works a treat for this for us. Don’t really use it in any other situations as she is quite polite in other ways, so can’t comment on that. Have the red size for her, but there is a lot of adjustment and it’s nearly on the tightest settings. She is pony/ cob size bridle.

I've got the black one, which is cob size I think. It was bought for my last horse, who was a 16h fine headed TB, but also fits my current one, who is a 14.2 Welsh x with quite a wide head.

it sounds perfect from what I've researched. She's a 16.2h quiet fine in the head. I'll see if I can measure her. I'm pretty sure a black will fit her.

She's a very sweet girl this is really the most pressing problem.

I’ve put my black dually on my 14.1 welshie and a 17hh Hunter, I think you’d be fine with the black. Key is using them properly (making sure you release the pressure immediately as they do what you’re asking) for them to be most effective.

The black fits my mare who is in a full sized bridle. Have you tried leading with the bridle on? I will pop it on mine if she starts getting opinionated - spotting spring grass and deciding to head for it being this week's manners meltdown....

I have used a Dually and do find they give better control BUT if leading a difficult horse on the road I would use a bridle.

Apart from anything else, if anything happened I would feel comfortable saying that I was leading a hose on the road in a bridle, but would feel wary of saying that I had a horse on the road in a halter, of whatever type.

For a tricky horse I would use a chain going round the bit rings in a triangular fashion, so if the horse pulls the chain tightens up, as a curb chain. I would practice this in an arena first until the horse knows how to release the pressure and does not panic.
