Just wondering if anyone can help me... I want to get one a dually/pressure headcollar thingy; has anyone got any recommendations, preferably nice and cheap, as the duallys are rather expensive!

Thanks

I like the dually for long reining in. I use be nice ones normally but it really depends on the horse and what you want to achieve. A rope halter may be sufficient?

If she is very bolshy I'd use a be nice but the idea is to get them responding to the lightest touch so you need to be proficient in its use. Not being rude, obviously I don't know if you have used one before or not. If you can get a hold of Richard Maxwell's Train your young horse, he has a section about which halter to go for.

I always use the american rope halters, have never used the Dually but I gather they need instruction on the careful use and can be open to abuse. The rope halters are self releasing as soon as the pressure is reduced, either by horse or handler and therefore are really helpful teaching pressure and release in a bolshy horse. Mine was from the Parelli people but expensive, there are some on ebay or here ( I lunge in mine as well as lead). http://www.getknottedropehalters.co.uk/products.htm The important part though is the lead rope - at least 12ft preferably 22ft so that if they barge away from you you have still got hold and have the time to get control back. And get a woven one if you do - they are much more responsive and "alive" so that you can transmit feel and get lighter and lighter.

buy cheap buy twice is my experience...

Wow great saying Neversaynever! Depends what you want it for but if you wanted to make up something free similar to a Dually you can always just loop the line round the nose (but please high up nearly under the cheekbone area on the side - the pressure is not meant to be like a drop noseband)

If you want a rope halter there are all sorts of 'gypsy' (am I allowed to say that?) type halters around at sales and I suppose on ebay.

I bought a Dually for my youngster, and although they are expensive, the amount of confidence its given me you cannot buy, its the best thing i have ever bought, im going to start to use it for long reining her soon.

i got the dually for my horse i used to have, it worked wonders on the ground!! he was extreamly hard work on the ground, then i started using the daully and he was totally different and my confidence was better with it too. would highly recomend it

Another vote for Dually, they are very well made and totally adjustable so will fit a wide range of horses. Problem is they don't come up 2nd hand very often and they go for almost new price even on Ebay

Dually everytime. My friend has a rope halter on her bolshy sec d, didn't work. Now is using my dually. Works a treat! Get second Hand off eBay with DVD

I have a Dually and a Richard Maxwell Training Halter. I had the Dually for my previous horse and I bought the Richard Maxwell Training Halter for the horse I have now as she is not keen on the pressure on the nose.

I do find that the Richard Maxwell one releases straight away which is brilliant. I have done a lot of training with this and we've had great results.

depends on the horse... Taz being the doofus he is quite often forgets im at the end of the rope :o rope halter made no difference at all with him but worked with our 3 year old. the be nice didnt work with him and i havent used it on any other horse, dually worked on him... infact i havent found a horse it hasnt worked on. Rio has too small a head for taz's dually so we use a rope with a chain which also works but it is used VERY rarely usually when the wind has picked up and the mares are in season so he is feeling full of it. but as i say its not used very often at all and only to remind him of his manners

I just ordered my Dually from the IH website :D, after realising that the one I have been borrowing is far too big!!
