Ok, so we all know that the gestation period of the mare is approximately 340 days (approx. 11 months and 5 days) - hence 'due dates'. Most of us know that a mare can deliver a healthy live foal anytime between 320 and 370 days. Can we leave it at that please? Almost every thread in here atm has mention of the correctness/incorrectness of due dates contained within it - I know, I've just gone and made another one...... but can we leave this? Or am I just a bore.......

I was waiting for a thread like this. Do you not think it's important to dispell the myth about the due date? So many people genuinely believe that their foal is going to arrive on a particular day (or a couple of days either side)... I think it could be potentially disastrous if someone went on believing this, didn't remove the caslicks until two days before the due date and... urgh... nasty!

hmmm yes and no, i would hope "most" people who choose to breed would also choose to learn about it and find that out! (yes i know not all but chances are those people wouldnt find this site!! ) It is too complicated in answering some posts to have to explain it each time, women get a due date but rarely do babies arrive on that given date...mine didnt...i am sat here tonight with my expectant Whippet who has definatly started 3 days early??!! but i always find dogs whelp on 60 days not the 63 days most people work the due day out too. Have you another word/phrase one could use?
smile.gif

Then why did you not just start one? That way the myth could be dispelled - or should it have been in with your other myths
tongue.gif
Good thread btw - interesting reading! Yes it is important, certainly in relation to caslicks and loss of sleep, dystocia's etc.... Maybe the subject should be made a sticky? Like your myths thread should be too....?

Nope very happy to leave it as a due date around 340, all getting far too confusing but was a bit of fun...i take it you read my reply to AP

Not just that, but AP does have a bee in his bonnet about it! Maybe I am just tired ....

OMG, I can't believe I missed it off my list of breeding myths!!!
smile.gif

I do get a bee in my bonnet - mostly about those ticker things that people have as their siggies where it says "53 days until Florence's foal is born!"!!!! Aaaargh!
mad.gif

AP just because someone has a ticker thingy doesn't mean they expect their foal to be born on that day! Deep breaths - just let it go.......
smile.gif

For those of us that are excited and cant wait for their babies, like me; I like counting it down to a due day of circa 340days, doesn't mean I expect it will be born on that day, like my own daughter who was in no rush to appear, born 10 days late and was induced, tbh she'd prob still be there if she could.............! lol

apologies if I dont make sense I'm tired 2.

I know, I know

But there definitely are people who do believe in a true equine due date, so from time to time, I will pop up and remind everyone that I am a grumpy old git when it comes these kinds of things

I have one due in May, and one in June. I know the covering dates but they will come when they come, easy as that, it is not a problem.

heey i love my ticker, it reminds me of how little time i have got left to do things like disinfect stable, order straw etc. I am fully aware the date is approx, she foaled last time at 352

I have an awful awful memory so its a useful tool for me to use. And just to keep you happy i have added "approx" to my ticker bar

I love the tickers...

I had one when Han was due last year, and she went 12 days over. She was 'due' so to speak on 28th Feb and had him on 12th March
laugh.gif
I think most of us know that mares have a wide gestation period, but having an idea certainly helps when you are staying over in a caravan

Poor AP - I think it's rather sweet the way he wants to make sure we all understand about the inaccuracy of 'due dates'! He's looking after us, bless him!

And besides, we all have our little hobby-horses and pet hates and so on. Mine is when I see a multi-page thread about whether a horse/pony can carry a certain weight of rider, where everybody yaks on about their height and their horses' height and nobody ever even mentions the word BONE!

Every time, I wade in, explain that it is the amount of BONE a horse has that determines it's weight-carrying ability, not its flipping height. Then I give the rule-of-thumb that 8 inches of bone can carry up to 13 stone, etc. With all the caveats. I suggest that they weigh themselves, with tack, and measure the horse or pony's bone.

They rarely take a blind bit of notice, and always go straight back to 'well, he's 14.2 and I'm 5ft4 and weigh 12 stone so that's OK isn't it?' or whatever. Grrrrrrrrr.

Sorry! Bit of a rant - and totally off-topic, but just to show we all have our 'triggers'!

We all do have triggers ht!! I don't even open those threads that you mentioned... that way I don't have to read them!!
grin.gif

My pet hate is snide comments but I have learnt to see the funny side to them... it really says more about the person that is making them than the person they are making them to!!

I have found I am getting alot more tolerant and just let things pass me by or I can usually (not always... after all we are all human and no one is perfect!
smile.gif
) stay calm and rational in my responses without getting my underwear knotted even when other people are getting hot under the collar...

and I use to try and play referee and advocate in the argy bargy that occassionally flares up in soapbox... but gave that up as a lost cause

i like my ticker, and i am perfectly aware that my mare isnt going to foal on the date ive used in it. Its a ''rough'' guide and i like looking at it to remind me who close she is!!

I really cant see what all the fuss is about.

I'll see to that Mat_b - LMAO!!

Have amended mine to keep the peace! I do only use the "due date" as an approximation and I do think its good that AP et al are only thinking of the mare/foals welfare by bringing it up!

With our old mare, she was caslicked, and I think we had it undone about a month before "ADD" so we were clear in case of earlier than the approximate date - which she was by 2 weeks in the end. (Maiden mare)

Maiden mare last time was "early" too...

So I will be ready for an early with this times too - seeing as she's another maiden and I fully expect her to be early - not for any scietific reason - just sods law as 320 - 370 days has my brothers wedding - at the other end of the country - right in there which might stop me going!

Love the myths thread by the way, v helpful - especially the worming and scouring one!

Evidently some of you would have heart failure if you came to my place! As you walk into the foaling barn there is a blackboard on the wall with DUE DATES written in big letters at the top and below a list of all my mares and the dates they are due....
smile.gif

I just thought of it as a rough guide. I was 11 days late to be born, my sister was 5, my BF a month early. All were given 'due dates'. I just think of the date as a guide to work things to.
laugh.gif

Doesn't stop me getting excited though.
