I lunged tonight with a lunge line round the back acting as a sort of pessoa but it was so difficult! I couldn't get the hang of it at all... anyone got any tips?!

Sounds confusing and tangled! What about the draw rein method if you don't have a pessoa. Search for threads on here by kerilli about it and she has done some brilliant 'how to' clips on YouTube. Or Google laura bechstolheimer's lunge technique on horsehero's YouTube channel and watch that. Laura uses a fancy rope but a knotted draw rein is just as effective. I've recently started using this technique and am a total convert.

Ah thank you everyone :D I actually didn't think about ebay haha! FG, I had one lunge line through the bit ring, over the head and attached to the opposite bit ring as I usually would do when lunging and then the other I had from out the outside bit ring, through the stirrup and round haha! It was awful trying to hold the lunge line round the back and then the whip as well haha!

If you'd clipped the inside line to the bit ring and through the inside stirrup it would have been a lot easier and you would have been long lining, which with a bit of practice can achieve the same results as a pessoa!

I do this with the Sec A's to get them working from behind in a way my young children couldn't. I was taught by a driving guy and it it a bit confusing but use the stirrup irons, and keep the contact even in you hands and soft.

I use a tail bandage (or 2 tied together) attached to the roller, works really well and as they stretch not too restricting.

Ditto this, but we use an exercise bandage. Works very well and our physio said actually better workout than a Pessoa!

Double line lunging/long reining gets easier as you get used to it and you have full control over when to give/reward the behaviour etc. I think pessoa's are a good idea but if you can master this its cheaper and like I say, you have full control over the give and take.

Use a crupper instead.

Which can be made by improvising --

Martingale, minus the neck strap, make the girth loop fairly large and wrap a vetwrap around it. Place under tail - carefully - if horse not used to it, take strap along the spine and attach, with the appropriate tension to the top ring on the roller using a snap clip or in my case, a old spur strap.

If you put plenty of holes in the martingale you can adjust a cob size to fit tinies right up to 16H +.

Lots of idea's thank you :D

Will try a few of them out :D I was very uncoordinated lunging last night haha! The worst bit was holding a lunge line and whip in the same hand and trying to use the whip without compromising the lunge lines!
