My 2yr 4m old filly is looking really dull at the moment, and has been since she arrived home from after a 4 month stay at stud, about 3 weeks ago.

She just doesn't look right in the eye, if you know what I mean. They look dull and smaller than usual. She's quiet, too. Quite unlike her. The vet was out for her flu/tet last week and didn't seem at all concerned. But then again, she didn't really look at her all that closely dispite my concerns. She just said she looked like she was getting over a bug.

The filly is definitely teething. She's lumpy under her jaw and I'm wondering if she's just feeling under the weather because of that. Not noticed such a change in any of my other youngsters, but maybe she's just suffering more. But it's her eye which really gives away that she's not right in herself.

Should I just put it down to teething and see how she goes, or would you be more concerned and get another vet to look her over? I just don't know.

She's eating okay, kicks up her heels in the paddock with her companion and is putting on weight.... I just don't like her looking so dull though

i would be concerned, enough to check her over thoroughly and review calling out a vet - she could have picked up any number of bugs/infections. You know your horse, so you know when she isn't right

In the meantime a course of Pink Powder might perk her up a bit

Maybe an idea to get the vet to take some bloods? At 2 it is unlikely that she will have impacted baby teeth (as the baby teeth that shed at that time are the front pre molars and therefore dont have teeth infront to wedge them)

The incisors could get impacted though so get the vet to check the 1s as they are due to change at 2 1/2

Good luck

Thanks.

I think I'll go by my instinct. If she's not looking considerably brighter in the eye by Monday morning, I'll have my other equine vet out to check her over and take bloods.

The filly came back from stud 3 weeks ago thin, run down and with a lump between her mandibles which has now popped. An abscess. The vet looked at it when I pointed it out to her, shrugged and said it was nothing to worry about. She said it was a 'bit of trapped infection' and that it would burst, after which the filly would be find. She's right in as much as it HAS burst (5 days ago) but the filly definitely isn't "right". Thinking about it, I cannot believe the vet was so lax. I mean, wouldn't any vet want to take bloods in such circumstances? A horse just returned from elsewhere, run down and poorly, with a forming abscess???
