So we’ve had a few days rain here and I can no longer get the wheelbarrow up to the back of the dung heap. I have a plank to use but that’s still not going to get me to the back. Every year the dung heap creeps forward and it’s the bane of my life. It’s only me so I can’t even blame anyone else!

Do you tip your wheelbarrow or fork it out? Is your dunfheap tidy or a mountain of mess? I’m after some inspiration on how best to manage it so it doesn’t grow too big this year.

I got fed up with trying to heap it and then get the heap moved, then I had a brainwave. I have a really steep high bank on the end of the arena, and I reckon it will take my entire lifetime before the heap, which is only dung, takes up more of the field than is acceptable. So now I muck out into bags and tip it down the back of the bank. I have no fences, so that's easy. This year's innovation was to use compostable bags, so now I just sling the bag down too. It looks a bit messy for a while, but nobody sees it except me when I'm riding.

I use my muckscoop and rake, and fling it to the back. Makes surprisingly easy work of the job when the poop is in one pile/location. I use that to regularly knock back the heap-creep during the summer too.

Nobody but nobody is allowed to interfere with the construction of our muckheap - that is the YO's department. Trouble is - she builds the most ridiculous muckheap imaginable. Really really small - which gets higher and higher, until it's like climbing b****y mount everest! We're not allowed to tip a barrow anywhere but on the top. I have to make 2 trips to the heap due to the terrible weight when I poo pick the field each day (horsey still living out at the mo - so plenty of heavy poo), and my poor old back is starting to seriously complain - and winter hasn't even started yet!
