Does anyone know of any durable turnout rugs?

My horse comes in most days with a rip in his rug its doing my head in!

Any ideas for durable turnout rugs that dont rip all the time for no reason. It doesnt matter if I buy him a £30 cheap rug or a £90 decent rug they all come back in from the field the same, whats really bugging me is that they seem to fall appart at the seams!

Im looking to buy him new rugs for next winter without the problems I have had this winter. So was just wondering if anyone could help tried and tested kind of thing.

Thanks

I've found the best durable rugs rambo wug plus or the supremes my little mare is a rug trasher and she's had her purple wug for nearly 7years and i haven't needed a single repair! Summer turnouts and fly sheets on the other hand we go through these at a rate of one a week.

Well much as I loathe to tempt fate my mare rips rugs regularly and has been turned out this winter due to me being pregnant, I bought her a check tech heavyweight turnout rug and it hasnt moved or ripped at all and I am most impressed with it....it has been on her all winter and no rubs even though I havent been up and removing it or changing rugs as I usually do and it was only £45 so no complaints from me!

Is the check tech thats been my latest nightmare.

If the seams were stronger I think it would be ok but its driving me mad.

I dont want to fork out for an expensive rug if he is going to come in every night with rips.

Horseware Amigo, cheap and brilliant!

My Mark Todd came in with a rip the first day my boy went out in it but the Amigos have been great. Don't like Shires either.

Also have a Rhinegold which has been pretty good but then my girl isn't particularly boisterous.

I think that fit of the rug might have something to do with it. Wilf just trashed rugs in hours, yet his l/w amigo was alway fine, we came to the thinking that most h/w rugs where quite small and restricting on him, hes a big lad, where as this l/w amigo was very generous. This winter he's had just one rhino h/w and not a rip.

Maybe try Premier Equine rugs, I swear by them now!

Equestrian Clearance have some Weatherbeeter Taka at a really good price, he's been wearing a heavyweight all winter and only now do we have a couple of nicks in it, so impressed have just got a lighter one for warmer weather.

Bucas rugs are rather good had mine for 18 months now and still no rips in it, not too overly priced either.

I bought a 400g 1600 denier turnout with a zipped neck and spare protector for the zip off ebay for under £85, it has gone on the horse who has already trashed three heavyweight rugs this winter. After a month there isn't a mark on it which is a record, so I would go for this one, I'm certainly going to buy more from them.
If you type in Ellehorse in a search engine their site should appear, or someone who works for them comes on the forum but can't recall their name. (hopefully she'll spot this and provide a link?)
I test so many rugs here from Rambo to cheapies on the retired horses and this is without doubt the toughest I've found. Only one slight problem with it the zip tends to slide a bit but attaching a velcro tag to it then the rug would solve this I'm sure (I plan on emailing them to suggest it)
They do lighter weight ones too, but definitley a good rug at a very cheap price (the spec is the same as the most expensive ones, as the higher the denier number, the less likely it is to rip)

Ditto the Denier comment, the only rugs to survive my itcy fellow is Shires 2000 Denier ones. However I have to do some sewing today on his rug!

We do also have a really old cameo that seems to be incredibly tough (cheapest from the Andoversford fair that dad could find as his horse had already trashed 2 rambos)

HH - how does the neck fit on that rug? Looked very snug (everything strangles mine apart from the Mark Todd / JHL neck covers)

I personaly would stay clear of Weatherbeeters as I find them of bad fit, restricting and small. (Infact I buy them for my youngsters being gawky and unfilled)

Ditto. My mare is quite prominent on the shoulder & alot of rugs would slip back & pull tight on her shoulder, no matter if they were the correct size. Got a Weatherbeeta in the correct size, turned her out in the morning, came back late afternoon & it had rubbed her shoulder bare

I do think they only fit a certain amount of horses.

The Rhino halfneck is the only one to have stayed in place & with satin patches on the shoulder area, it has not rubbed her & she loves it. It really does fit her well & they are extremely hard wearing. It's on it's second winter & there is not one nick in it

Thank you for posting this! My horse is out with an absolute yob and I went through 3 rugs in a week

My horse came in today with a big chunk out of his neck so as well as looking for a new hardcore rug, my horse will be out on his own until he's healed

I have had two amigos go this winter. The MW ripped and the LW belly strap fell off. My rugs do get a pounding as I have a very active 5 yr old who lives out 24/7. He is now in a GFS and so far so good!
