Right, if i'm going on DIY then I want to do my boy the way I want him done!

He's not great on shavings so I wanted him to go on something with little or no dust.....what can you guys recommend?

He's got something under his bed at the moment which is very fine and apparently soaks up the wee - not sure of the name of it.

He is the dirtiest horse in the worse - very p*ssy and pooey and a bit of a box walker.....oh the joy of seeing that every morning soon!

doesn't say anything about pre soaking though - perhaps I'mwrong.

This would be great as I'm planning on skipping out in the week with full muckouts at weekends........

I have just switched from shavings to easibed and I love it- so easy to muck out. BUT Sam is a clean horse. I tried shavings and also tried easibed with a previous v messy horse and it was a waste of time, you didn't get the benefits of the bedding because the horse just mixed it all up.

If I had another messy horse I would probably put thick mats down and use a thin layer of something ultra absorbant over the top (ie not easibed).

Hi,

My boy is a filthy beast and he likes to get his bed well trampled in. I have him in straw because I think it is best for horses and a full muckout everyday takes no more than 15 mins, usually less. I am not sure that skipping out will save you much time and digging the bed out every weekend will take far longer I am sure. Even on the days he is in all day (rain etc) he is still mucked out in under 20 mins then I leave the bed up for the floor to dry while I ride etc and then put it back down just before I put jim to bed. I use less than 1 bale of straw a week and my boy always has a lovely deep fluffy bed.

I've got a pretty mucky horse and have been through numerous bedding routines trying to find something quick and easy and relatively cheap to manage around working hours.

TBH any of the semi-deep litter systems on dust free bedding (bedmax, equisorb etc.) are pretty time consuming on a mucky horse as you need to really manage the bed well to stop it being a sh*t pit by the time the weekend comes.

If I am honest straw is the cheapest option available, and surprisingly, provided the straw is good quality my horse with a dust allergy is fine on good straw!
The downside to straw is that it is pretty smelly and if you are going from stables to work then you get a bit whiffy !

If you can bear it, rubber mats with a bit of absorbant bedding on top, swept out daily is quick and cheap. It's what I do with my messy one, don't particularly like not having a full bed but I put up with it for the convenience.

sorry!

Yeah I think this is what he's on now - he was quite good on deep litter before but just need to make sure that the layer underneath is ultra, ultra absorbant!

What if you used Easibed on it's own?

Have you used the easibed on it's own without shavings so it doesn't mix in?

Bedmax is good, hugh 1" shaving, poo sits on the top and doesn't mix it, wee filters to the base. No dust at all. I have tried shavings, then easibed, but find Bedmax better (but my mare is a dirty troll!!).

No, they are enormous flakes.....like shavings, but much, much bigger!!

Bedmax

Just rung up local stockists and they're no more expensive than normal shavings so will give it a go when the boy moves!

Sparks is really, really wet, but I find with the bedmax the wet drains through the top layer of bedding, and gets absorbed by the lower layer. So I just pick the droppings on off the top (they don't sink into the bed, like the do on a shavings bed) and the scrape the top layer of bed back and dig out the wet layer. I sometimes sprink the floor in the winter with 'Stablezone' if she is really, really wet, which is a anti-bacterial powder.
