Hi,

I'm moving to a new yard that does not allow wood pellet bedding

Now on my current yard I'm using wood pellets, which works really well for me.

I'm the one that's allergic to both hay ans straw :(

But horse is very wet and messy:(:(

So what do you think of straw or miscanthus pellets? what are the benefits of either, which do you prefer?

Confussed.com

Aubiose, Hemcore and Rapport are all good - dust free (as much as any bedding is) and absorbant.

Invest in rubber mats too if yard doesn't already have them.

I don't like miscanthus, the outer bit of the plant is shiney, like bamboo cane, and so not absorbant. I also find they kick about and don't bed down like the ones I've given above.

Dixons do a nice chopped straw which I always used before pellets became available. It's dust extracted and chopped pretty fine so 'lays' well which I think is half the battle with a wet horse as then it doesn't get churned in so much.

Are you not allowed shavings either?

Nedsbed is rapestraw, sounds like what jesstickle was using. It packs down nicely and holds the wet. You can deep litter it if you want but I choose not to. I use it with rubber mats. I am allergic to straw etc and am fine using it. Quick to muck out and it goes on a normal muckheap. I found the bags are quite generous and one will last me 10 days, if horse is out all day.

I use straw pellets but they can get pretty dusty. I see no reason why you couldn't dampen them though; although it may not be great for the soles and frogs.

I use the straw pellets....they can get quite dusty, but it isn't a dust like you would get with cheap shavings or dusty hay or anything....it is a very 'heavy' dust which doesn't make you feel like you are breathing it in (does that make sense!?). I have recently started using shavings as a top layer to prevent the dust, but that is only because the ledges in my stables were getting dusty and it was annoying me!!!

A friend of mine uses the pellets with rapport (chopped rape I think?) over the top which also has the same effect.

Have just had long thread about my lovely mare eating everything bedding wise so tried Rapport for the first time last night and RESULT!! Works brilliantly, no dust or smells etc., and so easy to muck out. Good luck!!
