I had a large round bale of hay delivered recently from my normal supplier. On opening it I find its really dusty. Do you think its reasonable to ask for a replacement?

Yes. I did this recently although I got a refund rather than replacement. I took the hay back so that I didn't have to get rid of it myself.

Wow, you all have great suppliers! Around here they'd just say tough sh*t not my problem.

There might be the rare one that would be concerned or accept a return or exchange, but they're the rare ones!

If it were dust from mold it would be a solid no from me and I would ask for a refund or exchange. If it is just this one, purely dusty, and ok when soaked or watered, I would live with it since I have to soak my horse's hay anyway.

I once collected a hay order from a farmer and he was throwing down small squares from his pile - some of them from the outside of the stack visibly mouldy, yellow, blue, cloud of mould spores erupted as they hit the ground, so i put them to one side, and loaded not so dusty ones, and when i said i wont be taking the mouldy ones, he basically said “if you wont buy my mouldy bales, you cant have any, unload the trailer” !!
?

”ok mate....ill send you the colic surgery bill then”

Im going to try soaking a couple of nets to see how it is, if im still not happy Im going to ask for a replacement, after all you wouldnt expect gone off food from the supermarket.
Not saying it’s okay. But dusty hay is different to mouldy hay. Mouldy hay is unacceptable. Dusty hay is not ideal but not gone off.

Dusty hay can be ok if soaked it's often just mud dust if it was incredibly dry when baled, but mould dust is totally different and no I wouldn't feed it so would send it back.
soaked a couple of nets, horse wont touch it. As I unwrapped the bale more there is white mold in it. Im not feeding that. Waiting for supplier to get back to me.

Soaking dusty hay that has mould spores won’t get rid of mould spores and can cause serious liver problems

I hope they exchange the hay good luck x
