Dutch Election

My OH is Indian. A Hindu as it happens, not Muslim. We have been to Holland on camping trips several times and always been made very welcome and have met many Dutch people in France and other places and found them, almost without exception, to be lovely people.HOWEVER last year we stayed on a Dutch owned camp site in France. We have stayed on a few at different times, never any problems. This was a strange place though.EVERYTHING was in Dutch, not even any French and we personally were made VERY unwelcome. We left the next day.It turns out that it was a christian (?) fundamentalist site although it was not advertized as such at all.It was a horrible experience.Only Dutch campers were there, no British French or any other nationality.I don't know wether there is growing rascism in Holland or wether its due to the economic downturn or what.Sectarian tensions are creeping back into Ireland now which most of ushoped never to see again.

The Dutch are quite a racist nation. Its not overtly racist, more sort of mild racism that they don't realise they are doing - some of the adverts here wouldn't be allowed in the UK/US!! They are also VERY difficult to integrate with and very cliquey. I've lived here for 3.5 years now and I have one Dutch friend, the rest are expats from all over the world. And that is not through lack of trying, trust me!

The problem is they opened the doors a few decades back but had no integration in place. Now its become a problem and some systems need to be put in place. But people's knee jerk reaction is to vote for a racist!! Its very scary - and he came second in the local elections in Den Haag as well. I just hope I never bump into him as I'd have a few choice words to say!

If you want bombers look what happened in Warrington.White christians if memory serves me right. If you want prejudice look at the screaming mobs that surrounded the Catholic children going to school in Northern Ireland that time.Do you want people thinking all christians are like that?

sorry I don't understand your point???

You don't have to be a muslim to be prejudiced or violent. We only here the bad things.Ordinary people going about their ordinary business in a peaceful fashion isn't news so it isn't reported. As someone in Saudi Arabia for example, watching some of the things done in Northern Ireland and by the IRA, you could easily think all christains were very prejudiced and violent people. Finally Eastenders have done a gay story between a muslim character and a christian called ironically enough Christian. There were no uprisings and the actors said they had many letters of suport from the muslim community. When some people complained about the child abuse done by the Catholic priests the Pope said they were being treated like the Jews in nazi Germany. There are pleasant and unpleasant people on every side.Once you start to demonize then the next route is civil strife and even the gas chambers. We live in an increasingly smaller world. We have to learn to live together.I write this as a very firm advocate of democracy and civil liberties.

Katikins,

It took me about a year of living in the Netherlands to realise that the spin of "The Dutch are so tolerant, and it is one big happy melting pot" is a complete and utter myth.

I have never met such racially intollerant people and after living in Greece that is saying something!

We have one jerk where I work who took great delight yesterday at lunch saying in front of a muslim 3rd generation Dutchman that he voted for Wilders to get rid of the Muslim Immigrants....whole table a mix of Brits, americans, Swiss, Dutch and French were just gobsmacked and I got up and walked away saying I felt his comment was inappropriate for the workplace.....

Still seething about it today actually!

Geert Wilders policies are overtly racist and quite similar to some of those spouted by the BNP! And generally the Dutch are welcoming on a one to one basis... but try living here (don't get me wrong, I love the country but there are some things that get up my nose... as they do in any country). If you want an example just check out Sinterklaas on wikipedia... most racist festival I've ever come across!!

Anyway, I think its totally outrageous to be targetting one group of people when if you look at it I've also taken away a job from a native together with housing, yet its fine for me because I'm from Western Europe. The PVV's policies are totally unworkable and none of the other parties want to work with them.

And sticking up for freedom, culture and democracy? How is demonising one cultural group part of that? Dutch muslims have as much right to democracy, freedom and culture as any other subgroup in Holland. I don't see them targetting the expat groups I'm a part of because we're not integrating properly!
