I think it depends on what problem you are trying to overcome as they are quite different bits. Personally I will not use a jointed pelham as imo they are neither one thing or another.
Not a question that can be answered without a lot more info. I would just point out though ,that both were designed to be used with double reins and a curb chain/strap.If I were about to choose which one to try first,my personal preference would probably be the Pelham. But I am sure an equal number of people could put forward a case for the Dutch gag.
^ Agreed. I use a dutch gag on both my horses, as they both fling their heads in the air when jumping, and have found the poll pressure from this bit actually lowers their head. Have only used a pelham once, borrowed from a friend, and it didn't really seem to do much good.
Ok well I currently have my gelding in a dutch gag for hacking but personaly I'm not to keen on it no idea why just don't like it? I did ride him in a mullen mouth pelham before and liked him better in it. Just don't know whether to keep the dutch gag or use my pelham?
mullen mouth pelham imo better than jointed as with the curb can turn into a nutcracker for the jaw . I know some ppl can say that horses lean into them but mine doesnt she has a hartwell pelham - the mouthpiece is forward curved and has a slight port.
depends how he goes in the gag? and what you dont like about it
I know jointed pelhams are supposed to be neither fish nor fowl, the joint blunting the curb action, but for a chap used to a jointed snaffle I found he went much better with a jointed pelham as he liked jointed bits and was familiar with it. BUT I always used with 2 reins so for 99% of the time I was using the snaffle rein, even knotted the other sometimes, but he knew it was there.
Whichever you use, do use 2 reins unless superbrakes needed all the time, otherwise you are punishing the horse everytime you have contact in a way.
If the horse dislikes poll pressure then a true running gag might be better than either.
sounds very familiar tried these bits eventually got a KK double jointed bublebit (similar to Dutch gag) but this is now one of my favourite bits .... have a look at http://www.frogpool.com/product-6284.htm
bit expensive but well worth having ...... also now use a myler ported bit seems to work very well only proof i have is that i have never had to change it in 2 or 3 years.. good luck
