Hi - I have a very strong Haflinger mare who is incredibly strong out jumping and in the open and we have tried many different solutions to make her less strong but none seem to be working. Many instructors and experienced people have been telling me that I should get a Dutch Gag for her - i naturally though a standard three ring one but a friend of ours says that horse can lean on it - she recommended a jointed one but im not sure! Can anyone give me a proper gag to use!! If a normal three ring is ok and horses do not lean on it please say and give your recommendations! the more help the better!

Thanks!:)

I've just put my Andalusian in a dutch gag as whilst I had brakes they were a tad sticky! He was in a Happy Mouth roller before and now he's in a Happy Mouth roller 2 ring gag. I think the 3 ring gags are a bit too harsh my boy is very sensitive and will fight anything thats too harsh for him. He was a little unsure of it at first but goes amazingly in it now and doesn't lean on it at all but then he's not a horse that has a tendency to lean. I would hire one and give it a go see whether she likes it with out trying it you just don't know whether it'll work or not.

If your horse leans you can get a dutch gag with a waterford mouthpiece - worked wonders with my sec D who was very strong on the hunting field.

I have used a 3 ring dutch gag with jointed mouth for 12 years on my horse I tried everything else and found it to be the only thing he didn't lean on. I ride in it all the time and very rarely take a contact unless he gets stong whilst cantering or such it works wonders for me.:)
