Hi, can you use a dutch gag/3 ring snaffle with a curb strap/chain? I've only seen a few people doing this out hunting, but is it 'correct'? What is the effect of it?

It should be used with a curb strap AND two reins. The fact that no-one usually does either is another matter that will get me ranting for ages!

The curb strap puts pressure on the chin groove and stops the shank from rotating as much. The bit was designed to be ridden with 2 reins, the higher rein is used first then the lower rein for a finer aid.

Using one rein confuses the action and makes communication with the horse very unclear.

MM -yes you can adapt them, but as TT says, you need 2 reins. Afterall who would ever dream of riding a pelham with one rein on the bottom shank?

You could try roundings, or just buy a pelham.
