Dutch Gold

I have a gelding by him.
I can honestly say I love this horse to bits. He is attractive, nice moving, very intelligent. Oozes personality and is quite cheeky but without over stepping the mark. Very genuine to ride. And this is coming from a completely amateur rider.

However, despite pretty good confo, he is 13 and has navicular, both hind suspensory ligaments have gone as well as a front sesamoid ligament. So he is essentially now a fancy field ornament

You often hear people saying that these Catherston types are very sharp and quirky, with a tendancy to rear etc. This horse (although he is not a complete donkey) certainly doesn't fit into that stereotype.

And obviously any chance to show off a picture !!!!

He is stunning, I have ridden 2 catherston horses both out of genuine arab mares, one of them was by goldstorm and a complete lunatic threw herself around when she didn't want to do something, the other by dance in the dark and he was a little gem had great personality very cheeky and a great person to be around.

It is slightly worrying to hear his problems, could these weaknesses have come from the mare or from anything else???

I have ridden two DG geldings both out of a grand prix mare. They were both nice horses but not the easiest rides. They were hugely talented but had the attitude that work was what idiots did. Their owner struggled to get them past medium and she is a hugely talented rider. At the lower levels they were nice to ride they had attitude but a capable novice could have coped. One ended up being pts after a major bout of colic and the other one now abbout 13 or 14 has has major soundness issues. I love Dutch gold but I would never buy his offspring or put a mare in foal to him as I have heard similar stories elsewhere. That is just my opinion though.

A close friend bought two, one in poor condition, almost to rescue it, to use as a broodmare. As soon as she was fed and better it was evident why she had been kept hungry, too sharp by a mile.

The second one could jump, but had many issues about doing anything else such as hacking. Had been from yard to yard to try and get her to behave like a normal horse, to no avail. Her foals were also on the sharp side too. Talented but not amateur rides.

I knew one by him- a very, very smart eventer that had been produced to intermediate by a pro rider. It was absolutely stunning when it arrived ( as a 8 y.o) and moved and jumped to die for, looked every bit a 4 star prospect. Was bought for big money by an amateur rider, and sadly it just fell to pieces and a few months later it was a shadow of the horse it used to be! Didnt think it was naughty or sharp tho, thats just a typical story of what often happens when a amateur buy's a pro-produced horse.

Have heard of a lot of very sharp and difficult horses by other catherston stallions tho! But All v. talented.

The one I knew had jumped sucessfully as a 4 year old but he couldn't handle the pressure and was sold as a dressage horse, but he never really had the brain for that either and has been known to go over backwards and generally do very stupid things. Not much to love, I'm afraid...

I wouldnt touch a Dutch Gold horse. The one I knew was a stunner to look at but he had a screw loose for sure - it's a long story so I wont bore you with it, but suffice to say that he could easily have killed someone one day

And as far as we knew his background was fine - he wasnt an ill treated horse, just a twisted one

As far as I know he was PTS at the age of 8 because no one could do anything with him

Thanks every1 for taking the time to reply.
There are pro's and con's about every stallion, my mare is going to be AI'd by Dutch Gold and I will be keeping the foal for myself (not a novice ridder, and am use to dangerous animals!) and I shall see what I get.
The mare is renowned for throwing bold sensible horses so fingers crossed.

Having bred and ridden many Dutch Gold horses (plus ridden the man himself on a few occasions) I love this stallion.

I dont quite know where this sharpness thing of Catherston Stallions is coming from as the ones I have ridden have all been very talented and nice easy horses to do.

As with anything if you are breeding alot of horses from one particular stud/stallion statistically you are going to breed alot of good horses but also a few not so good as well. There are so many factors that one has to consider when analising any stallion. As a stallion/stud owner myself I know what it takes to make or break or a horse and really the Sire is way down the list of these factors.
As we all know the mare imputs up to (if not more) than 70% into the resulting foal so perhaps one should look at the mares being breed carefully as a good start to achieveing a nice sound foal in mind and body.

Two seasons agao I bred the first Dutch Goldd foal in Australisia were I am now based and this filly who is o/o a lovely TB mare is outstanding and winning everything with her new owner. She is very easy, kind and gentle so much so they have 'ordered' another one!!

Good luck. His semen is of extemely good quality too.

Primrosecourt thank you for your reply, I think you hit the nail on the head as regards to people looking at their mares they are breeding from. I want to use the best stallion I can and lets face it what Dutch Gold has acieved is second to none really. My mare is graded into the main stud book (SHBGB) just missed out on head book due to capped hock, She is the dam of a WINNING ADVANCED dressage mare (129bd points) also her son has WON 2 BE classes, there is a son in between them 2 horses which I have not yet traced, and the other 3 foals are 4yo and under. So in a nut shell I think this will make a great cross and will certainly be out competing.
(only concern is soundness issues!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Thanks again

Sounds like a fabulous cross then....

I will be using him on my GP mare at some point in the future. She is quite special being only 15hh and an Apaloosa!!
I also have a Springsteen baby due next month to a big Hessen bred mare and I cant wait for this as I knew Springsteens sire very well( Dutch Dream) and he was beautiful. If it is a filly I shall be keeping this one for sure!

Good luck with your mare she sounds very special.

Hi Primrosecourt, I'm hoping for a filly this time as mare aint getting any younger and relly want a daughter out of her to keep as a future broodmare. Its nice to hear that you have an appaloosa competing at such a high level I have a 3yo appy stallion from the 'Danish Blue/Rodega Tobias' lines just been backed an going relly well.
Good luck with your horses too, hope the foaling goes well and mum and baby are healthy (look forward to seeing photos).

My 4yo mare by DG is brilliant, crafty, clever and probably smarter than I. Nothing gets past this mare, and my two cents' worth is stick to the rules in regards to training and handling endeavors. I LOVE this mare. She gives 110 percent. She's out of a main studbook Hanoverian.
