I have a pair of short brown boots, they were very expensive and are very comfortable. I'm planning to enter some competition with my horse this winter so I was searching for a pair of chaps that would match properly my boots but I found out that in Italy ( where I live) in competition they only allow black boots.. So I was thinking that maybe the cheapest way was to dye my short boots black and then buy a pair of black leather chaps... Do you think that's a good idea? What product could I use? Is there any polish that makes brown leather darker? Thanks for your help julia

By the time you've bought the polish and the chaps and then realised you've ruined a perfectly good pair of boots it would seem to me to be more sensible and cheaper to buy a cheap pair of black boots.

i guess it depends how strictly the rules are interpreted - it seems a shame not to be able to use comfortable boots. I polished a pair of brown boots with black polish to darken them down then wore them with black gaiters - no one even noticed - after all once you are in the saddle it's only the brown toes that can be seen (and they were very dark brown and shiny), the leg part was black.

If you are going to do it then send the bpots to a professional to dye them properly, you can buy shoe dye very easily but results on a 'do it youself' job can be varied

I used olive oil over a few weeks to darken a light brown saddle to very dark brown. It wouldn't make your boots black..but def would darken them. Apparently sunshine after oiling also helps speed the darkening - if you're in Italy I guess olive oil and sunshine are both v easy to get hold of?!
