Dying canvas... or webbing

I've just unearthed a very nice but ancient lunging roller, which I'm looking forward to reconditioning - but the fabric is very faded and I'd like to refresh it. Due to the leatherwork I'd probably want something I could paint on rather than soaking. I also have some continental reins that could do with cheering up!

Any thoughts what I could use? I'm seeing suggestions for fabric paints but I just wonder if anyone has any more specific knowledge, or experience to share I probably don't want to also dye my horse when he sweats all over them...
