I am a hairdresser and have wondered if it is possible to dye horse hair???

I wonder this because, if it is, then surely a freezemark could be dyed and the horse sold before it either grows or fades out!!

I obviously never have and never would try this, but wondered whether it is possible to do.

I have been told two opposite tales by other people, one who claims that Merlin was used in a period drama called Daniel Deronda and had to be blacked up to match a black horse who wouldnt jump......

And someone else (cant remember who) told me that it isnt possible.

Anyone know the truth.......

I would have thought it was possible to dye the hair, as the reason it's white is damage to the follicles. Surely it's the same as human hair...? You'd probably know more about that than me! A bit of black boot polish would probably do it, from a distance anyway!

I know of a SJ dealer who did the opposite... he would buy a horse, take it up through the levels under one registered name. If it wasn't good enough to go all the way, it would acquire some new white markings (burnt the skin with hot potato til the hair grew back in white), lose a year or two in age, and gain a new name. Then it would be introduced to potential purchasers as a novice horse who had only just started jumping. Unsurprisingly, it would appear very talented, and people would buy it for huge amounts of cash.
Don't know about dying hair though.

We just used human hair dye!!! Several boxes of powder type dye mixed up and painted on and then rinsed with a hose (very technical)!!!!! Fake star and scars were stuck on and white mark on hind leg was painted on some with grease paint (it looked really crap close up). One Ginger (a mare) who teated positive for EHV (I think) got sent back as stallions on the yard with a very dodgey chesnut mane (was previously flaxen). Black beauty also switched between a filly, colt, geldings and stallions. Merry legs swithed between a mare and a gelding and Ginger was mainly played by a gelding. Sorry to burst anyones bubble!!!!

I know someone with a grey horse who had a very light tail. So she though she would try and even him up by dying his tail a bit darker. Anyway - it turned blue!!! She had to have "an emergency call out" from a very confused hairdresser! How she managed to do that I have no idea, but I don't think I'll ever be trying anything of the sort
