Strange topic, I know... Am hoping to do some showing (in the far future) with a mare who has some white patches from old scars, would it be feasable to dye the white patches? Not something I've ever considered before. I know people who have used boot polish to cover small marks, but don't think that would work in this case as all three marks are bigger than 2 50p coins. Has anyone tried this before? Do the horse make up things work in these cases?

Was merely wondering? What do you think?

I often wondered about hair dye and Im sure someone told me once it didnt work?? but I had a bay mare with black legs and she had areas of pressure sores from bandaging that had grown back white (previous home), I used the gold label black stick which was like a big black crayon. It did the job but close up looked a bit sticky.

Yes, definitely possible. My friends used to show palomino's, and marks were marked down. Their stallion had a big dark mark on his hind quarters, so they used to dye it! Worked a treat though.

What colour do you need??

Yes it does work. Takes some practise to get the colour right, we used to use the one with davina in the advert. Chestnut was the hardest to get right. put vaseline around the edges of the white patch to stop the dye running then just follow the instructions on the packet.

good luck x x

How funny - we were only talking about this out hunting the other day because my horse has got white patches beneath his withers and we were wondering whether you could dye them.

Black for leg marks and brown for wither. Anything will look better than the white marks as they are quite obvious on her dark coat. The wither one hopefully will get harder to see as she grows up anyway, as I think that'll be the hardest to match for colour. Obviously patch tests would be done... vaseline is a great idea, how did the result look? Natural?

Thanks for your help everyone

Yes the results looked Ok, once you get the colour right its dead simple. Beware though if you have any wappy (NH) people on your yard they get quite offended. One threatened to hit me with their carrot stick he he he.

Take some pics to show us

I got some eyelash dye from Boots chemist. They do black and brown and costs about £5. I figured that if it was gentle enough for around people's eyes it must be safe and not hurt my neddies legs!!!

A previous horse I had was a very dark bay but had lovely liver chestnut highlights in his tail due to his Dad being liver chestnut. I used to use henna to keep the highlights shining through for his tail and I also used to use the shampoo in the chemist (cheapy one) for black haired people to keep his coat as black as possible (it used to go a bit brown in the summer) and I loved it jet black. It never caused him a problem, I used to wash it well out, but it really made a difference. In the summer I use Henna shampoo on my Bay and his coat goes a lovely reddy brown shine.

I also have used eyelash dye. It worked a treat. Comes with a handy come for lash which made it easy to get it right down to the roots without getting it on her slin. i was covering while scars on legs and it lasted ages.

I don't know what she used, but my boss once dyed her horse's wonky face stripe in the hope of stopping the "not straight" comments on her dressage sheets when she was certain she was dead on straight down the centre line!! Don't know if it worked as the horse got injured... but it's definitely possible!
