E&L Equine insurance - any good?

I had rather hoped someone from E&L would eventually get the message. However, I also work in the commercial world, and your comment about taking time to make the right decision sounds to my cynical ears like we will pay your claim.....eventually.

My experience is second hand, as my OH is insured with E&L and made a claim some while ago. In the end she had to settle several of the outstanding bills herself, despite getting the go ahead 'over the phone' (a bad mistake to accept telephone confirmation), as the delay in the payments for treatments given had become a major embarrassment. I think she, and the vet were eventually paid something like 9 to 12 months later.

My wise old Father in Law has a good phrase, left over from his years in the building supply industry " Customers make pay days possible".

Due diligence is one thing, dragging your heels is something different. I guess only time will tell if things have improved.

My vets no longer deal with E+L.....I had to pay up-front for treatment then try and wrestle it out of E+L......although it should have been a simple claim...he was kicked in the field and suffered a fractured cannon bone.

E+L asked for names and addresses of the other owners whose horses had been in the field at the time....I refused, and sent them back a letter saying I had personally asked every horse on the yard who had done it and they all denied it...

......they didn't ask again.

The equine clinic I took my horse to last night, ready for his op today, gave me a piece of paper with loads of info on it. At the bottom in large bold letters, was the following:

"Horses insured with E&L insurance will be regarded as NOT insured and payment will be required on collection of the animal."

Steer clear. They have a bad rep for a reason; and the piece of paper I was given last night should tell you all you need to know, when a large, popular vet clinic does not regard them as a reputable insurer! This clinic deals with hundreds of insurance claims!

I am insured with Scottish Equestrian, by the way. Last year, they paid out for the vets bills and death of horse WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF THE CLAIM - no hassle, no questions or doubts. They just paid!

They have been wonderful about my claim at the moment as well.

O.M.G. are you serious?

That's atrocious. If E&L are really that bad, why on earth are they still operating? You would have thought something would have been done to stop them from offering their equine policies. I just feel sorry for all those people who are not followers of this forum who don't know better than to use this company.

Well, theyhave the reputation for a reason, like I said. They are awful with paying up is what it looks like to me. I'd love to scan the bit of paper in to show you. I'll try do that if my scanner will work (but getting a new one tonight so will later if you want).

I agree with you. My horse's op is 2k. I have already paid out £900 to the clinic for tests and to normal vets. So I'd be nearly 3k down and maybe wouldn't see that money again!

Wish Id of known before.Ive been with them 3 years now, want to change insureres BUT I have to have the vet to my horse tomorrow,so got to wait.Hopefully it wont come to claiming then I can change to anothee company!!

I had a claim going through NFU at the same time my YO had one going through E & L .....

.... My claim took over half a year to sort out, and a lot of it we ended up paying ourselves as we were getting warning letters through from the places that were owed money.

... YO got everything through very quickly, very efficient and had no problems at all.

Everyone has good and bad experiences, people just say 'no' without actually knowing, they just say they know others who say no, who know someone else etcetc.

I decided to insure with them, I rang up yesterday to confirm payment of my £1500 vet bill for a procedure which hasn't happened yet (as I was waiting to confirm insurance) they were fine about it, manager rang me back and said I was covered, and they'd be sending out the laim form. I could even claim back the cost of call out and examination, which NFU didn't cover me for.

Eee that's worrying

Well, If mine say that then I hope that I can just pay myself, and claim the money back to me rather than to the vets, if I keep the bills. I'll ring up and find out.

I was and still am insured with them. Tiggy was insured with them, and when I lost her, dealing with them was painful. They did pay out, after a little argy-bargy, but the whole process made a bad time worse, in my experience

Same experience here. It took a YEAR and a legal threat to make them pay out.
Was a straighforward claim for acute grass sickness.

Not what you want in an already horrible time

Don't touch with a 10 foot pole.
I warned a old yard mate about them, she didn't listen sadly and last time I spoke to her (about 5 months ago), her horse was lame, the vet school made her pay up front and she was having trouble getting payment from E&L...

Like a year?

on a straightforward PTS grass sickness case with NO prior illness or injury whatsoever, 5 years of no claims and regular DD payments with your company and full supporting evidence from vet.

Don't make me laugh

Agree totally April had exactly the same problem myself, except it was for a horse found dead in a field after a thunderstorm pm showed she had died of a heartattack after breaking her neck!

Took me a year too and one hell of a fight!

It is good to see someone from E&L reading the forum. I would be interested to know how they manage a rating of just 0.5 out of 5 from 216 reviews when they are doing nothing wrong! You just have to read the reviews to see what their own customers think of them - maybe when this average goes up to 4 or 5 then it would be worth considering them but I'd not be taking the risk just because they say they are trying to improve.

Oh theyre latest is We process claims within a week.Hmmmm we'll see as Im about to put one in (for same sarcoid ) we will see if they try to get out of it as its a continue of treatment last year.

If your horse gets colic you claim they exclude and then your horse dies 2 years later they will NOT pay out. I told them I was disgusted.

Will let you!!
